Though TASER devices and stun guns are now a common sight for self defense use, they were restricted to law enforcement use until just a few decades ago. In fact, though these devices are quite popular today, they were rarely seen as self-defense products carried by consumers until the 1990s. Though today many models are developed specifically for civilian use, there are still some TASER models designed specifically for use by law enforcement agencies and the military.
The first stun guns were developed specifically for law enforcement, not civilian, use. Weaker than todays versions, the electrically charged devices of the 1940s through the 1970s that preceded todays more popular stun guns and TASER models delivered a mild electrical shock. Many early devices were designed for use by postmen for the control of dogs, and were then adopted by scattered police departments for the purpose of controlling prisoners or preventing riots. The first modern stun guns were developed in the early 1970s with the high voltage and low amperage which makes todays TASER devices and stun guns so effective, yet still unlikely to cause permanent injury.
The first TASER devices were officially classified as a firearm in 1976, making them difficult for civilians to carry for self defense due to the legalities of carrying a firearm, though they began to grow quite popular with law enforcement agencies. By the end of the 1970s, newly developed TASER models could be carried by consumers in most states as self-defense products, because they used a different method to propel the electrically-charged probes, and thus were no longer classified as firearms.
Today, the most popular TASER models meant for professional use are the TASER X26 and the TASER M26. For civilian use, the TASER C2 is the most popular model, though there are other options. The newly released M-series is destined to become the most popular TASER device yet. All TASER devices work by shooting electrically charged probes, up to 15 feet away for civilian models, and 35 feet for those designed for law enforcement or military use.
All TASER devices, whether for professional or civilian use, have replaceable cartridges containing compressed nitrogen to launch the probes when the TASER device is activated. Once it hits the target, the TASER devices probe will prevent voluntary muscle control. Today, all TASER cartridges also contain a unique Anti-Felon Identification, or AFID, tag. These small confetti-like pieces are also expelled by the nitrogen cartridge, and they identify the serial number of the cartridge so that the owner of the TASER device can be identified. If you miss or if multiple people are attacking you at once, TASER devices also double as stun guns to be pressed against the assailant.
The TASER C2 or M-Series, currently the most popular civilian TASER models, make a great choice if youre looking for a powerful self defense device. The line of non-lethal TASER devices is also carried by law enforcement agencies around the world as an alternative to using a firearm. It allows the diffusing of a potentially dangerous situation from several feet away, allowing you to keep a safer distance from any assailant. Plus, there is no worry about permanent injury or death, as would be likely to occur if a firearm was used instead. The TASER models are a great option when determining your self defense strategy.
