Major medical universities encourage international students into their programs for clinical rotations and experience. To pursue the clinical elective courses at major universities, visiting students are allowed to attend a maximum of twenty-four credit hours in a twelve week period. Availability of rotation is first given to the university's medical students. All other rotations are assigned as a "first come, first served" basis.
After the twenty-four credits and rotation hours have been reached, visiting students may not apply for additional credit hours without express permission from the Medical Student Affairs Department.
There are domestic medical schools that do not accept students from Caribbean offshore medical schools or those U.S. and Canadian citizens with dual citizenship and attending medical schools internationally. There are exceptions, but these need to be discussed with the medical school, the international attendee's school, and the administration.
Application Information
All domestic and foreign visiting students are subject to the follow information submissions:
�Completed VSAS information. This includes domestic students. VSAS is the Visiting Student Application Service or an American Medical College Application
�Visiting students need to have their own personal health insurance. You do have access to the student health department if you are sick or injured.
�Immunizations are required. A list of immunizations and compliance is provided on the homepage of each medical school. You do need to have this information sent in with the visiting student application.
�Proof of liability insurance must be included with all applications.
�HIPPA training must be taken and a certificate provided.
Eligibility and Rules
To be able to attend a medical clinic rotation as a visiting student, there are eligibility and policy guidelines that must be met. These are:
�Students must be in the final year of medical school.
�No salaries, meals, name badges, uniforms or housing is provided. There is no tuition charged. You are welcome to bring a name badge and picture ID from your original school. You do need a form of identification when you come to clinical rotations.
�Short white coats with shirts and ties for gentlemen are required. Appropriate attire for women, business casual, is preferred for women.
�Final applications need to be received at least two months prior to starting the requested rotations.
�Check with the medical school to determine what rotations are available for visiting students. There are rotations that are only available for direct campus students.
Honor your commitment if you are accepted for a clinical rotation. If there are conditions that prevent you from coming, you do need to notify the clinical department immediately. If you are cancelling your rotation, you do need to submit a written notice four weeks in advance. You cannot make changes to a rotation schedule once you have been accepted.
Issues of misconduct will not be tolerated. If it is found that a visiting student has violated the rules and regulations of the university, they will be immediately dismissed from the visiting rotation program and no provision to reapply. Do stay ethical and honest in your dealings with students, administration and patients during your rotations.
