S-adenosylmethionine, commonly abbreviated as SAMe, is a chemical compound naturally produced by the human body to assist in many different metabolic processes. These chemical reactions are largely involved in the production of several hormones and neurotransmitters such dopamine, serotonin, and melatonin. The synthetic form marketed as SAMe has been proven safe as a dietary supplement and has been in use for over a decade now. A number of studies have indicated that daily supplementation of SAMe is responsible for removing the pain associated with osteoarthritis among others.
Joint pains are one of the many complaints tied to all types of arthritis, which in most cases involve inflammatory responses of the human body. Osteoarthritis, the most common type, is in fact a degenerative joint disease, which appears almost always with other age-related disease, but not really caused by the process of aging itself. The ends of bones literally wear down when they rub each other in that as we age some of the protective tissues inside the cartilage that surround the bones get depleted. S-adenosylmethionine has been cited many times to be at par with other drugs in use today to remove the pain characteristic of degenerative joint disease.
Reduces Inflammatory Pain
Stiffness contributes to the pain, which is a consequence to the inflammation that ensues. It is a part of the bodys mechanism to act on diseases of the joints the same way it deals with infection in other parts of the body, and in an attempt to remedy the breakdown of bone particles these mechanism produce inflammatory effects that bring about reduced range of movement. When the bone particles that have been discarded from the bones fill the space in the joints, the body tries to remove them, and this is when inflammatory agents enter the cavities and where pain actually takes place. Stiffness is experienced when new bony particles form along the joints in the form of protrusions that largely increase the surface area of the joints, significantly affecting joint movement.
A number of analgesics in the market today are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, popularly referred to as NSAIDs. As the name suggests, these drugs act on reducing inflammation. There have been a number of clinical trials that show the efficacy of S-adenosylmethionine, and many of these studies made comparisons with NSAIDs. SAMe, the synthetic form, has been proven effective even in short-term studies and have been reported to help morning stiffness and improve walking pace.
Produces no Serious Side Effects
It is a known fact that S-adenosylmethionine has become popular among patients of arthritis due to the fact that it is in general considered safe when taken as a dietary supplement and strong anecdotal evidence point to the absence of adverse effects. That being said, diarrhea and headaches are the best known side effects in some patients while NSAIDs are known to produce gastrointestinal problems such as stomach ulcers and intestinal damage. Furthermore, regular intake of SAMe is believed to promote overall health.
SAMe is available at your local or internet vitamin store in capsule or tablet forms. Always choose name brands to ensure quality and purity of the product you buy for better health.
