Article writing in the freelancing field can be a successful and potentially lucrative way to make your way in the writing profession. Clients are often always looking for content and there can always be something to write about. After all, you are reading this right now, correct?
First and foremost, make sure that your work is original. Do not plagiarize, under any circumstances. That might be the best way to kill yourself off in this profession before you even get started. Many clients have programs that can determine if you took your work from someone else. Please, don't do it.
This can follow up along plagiarism, always cite your sources. It really helps to know about the APA format for citing, however if one is comfortable using computers, hyperlinking can be a very good way to show your sources and give credit where credit is due. It also can look very professional. Just don't overdo it, or it might look too much like some sort of spam. One should always cite your sources if you are stating a fact and the hyperlink can show that what you are speaking about is valid.
Also, check your facts and make sure that they are accurate. There cannot be anything much more embarrassing than a piece of work that is not checked. It tends to show that one did not give it their best effort and perhaps rushed through the assignment instead of checking and double-checking to make sure that every fact is true.
If you want to stand out in your article writing and in a positive way, perhaps come up with a new voice, or a new approach to a topic, something that will make your article writing be unique in a crowd. One of the biggest challenges that a freelance writer can face is the competition. There will always be someone who potentially could write better or be cheaper to hire than you. The key is to rise above your competition and be a writer that clients will hire because they like how you approach topics. Not only that, it is still a way to express your creative side by finding a new and exciting angle to approach a topic that may have been written about many, many times.
It is always helpful, at least in the beginning of a freelance writing career to write about what you know. It is safe, and one can definitely bring an expert voice to the topic. However, it also can be really refreshing and educational to challenge yourself to write about topic you may not know much about. Learn about the topic, research it as much as you can and get as much information about possible. It can be a great way to expand your horizons and diversify your writing portfolio. Article writing can be a great deal of fun and hopefully by trying different tips and coming up with tips of your own, you will be a very successful freelance article writer.
