Prior to being part of television's fame-generating machine American Idol, Chris Daughtry was a relatively unknown singer-songwriter playing both solo acoustic and with his first band Absent Element in the local North Carolina bar scene. Though he was voted off American Idol in the top four, Daughtry made enough of an impression on America to later propel his band to overnight stardom. Daughtry is known as the third most successful Idol contestant behind Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.
The band Daughtry is comprised of Chris Daughtry on vocals, Josh Paul on bass guitar, Joey Barnes on drums, and guitar players Brian Craddock and Josh Steely. Their self-titled debut album went double-platinum and yielded hits like "It's Not Over," a song co-written by Daughtry's fellow Idol contestant Ace Young, as well as "Leave This Town," and "Over You." The singles "Feels Like Tonight" and "Home" were even used in NASCAR promotions.
Daughtry became the quickest selling debut rock album in Soundscan history. It went on to become the #1 selling album in the country two times after debuting in November, 2006, at #2 and selling more than 300,000 copies in its first week of release. This made Daughtry the first rock band album in almost 20 years to hit the top spot on the charts after debuting below #1. The last album to do this was Bon Jovi's 1988 New Jersey.
"It's Not Over" was the debut single off the album and it went on to top every major music industry chart. It was #1 on the Adult Top 40 chart, Hot AC Chart, and Billboard Top Singles chart. The video for the single remained at the top of VH1's Top 20 countdown for two months and gained additional recognition as the most-played video on MTV.
Daughtry remained in the Top 5 of the Billboard Top 200 Albums for a long run. It was the first album since 2006 to spend more than nine weeks in the Top 3 albums. Daughtry is the first rock band to achieve this feat in the first 15 weeks of album release since Creed did it in 2002. Overall, Daughtry yielded five Top 40 singles. Once hailed by Simon Cowell as the contestant who refused to compromise, Chris Daughtry has a way of incorporating his signature hard-rocking yet soulful sound into all of the band's melodies. Of the group's success, Daughtry comments, "You walk through a lot of doors for a moment like this. I'm enjoying every minute."
Released in July 2009, Daughtry's sophomore album entitled Leave This Town has already yielded the hit "No Surprise." Tune into the radio and VH1 countdown today, and you will undoubtedly hear the single "Life After You" on rotation. Leave This Town is sure to yield additional hit singles throughout the coming year.
Daughtry's 2007 tour was hailed as a must-see event. Their current tour is also bound to exceed expectations. Chris Daughtry feels at one with his fan base when recording and touring. "To start out as a fan with a dream, and then to go from a struggling musician with the same hopes and aspirations as so many others and to be able to fulfill some of those dreams, well, I feel like we're all part of this incredible movement," says Daughtry.
