For centuries, highly skilled artisans have been crafting beautiful, functional masterpieces we now call Oriental rugs. These works of art are hand-woven of natural fibers and made in the geographical regions of the Near, Middle, and Far East, as well as the Balkans. There is a rich history involved in the making of Oriental rugs, and these traditions continue today, often with awe-inspiring results.

Shopping for the perfect area rug for your space can be a challenge but by keeping an eye on the basic construction of great quality rugs and their benefits you can make this process much easier.

How a rug is constructed will generally impact the overall cost and quality of a rug. It seems logical right?

While some rugs are trendy and interchangeable, others (generally the more expensive) can be considered investment pieces.

Typically the most labor-intensive technique used to make rugs is hand-knotting. This is where most invest. The surface, (also known as the pile) of a rug is built of tiny, individual knots tied by weavers.

These rugs can take up to many years to complete and are as unique as they come. Hand-knotted rugs are usually more durable than others lasting anywhere from 25 hundreds of years. While this type of rug does shed, it will not shed as much as other constructions.

Tufted and hooked rugs use a similar technique. If you look close you can see the loops of yarn that were pulled through a mesh backing material to create the pile. The weaver follows a pattern on the backing material and uses a small tool to place the loops.

Tufted rugs loops are then sheared to create a smooth surface while hooked rugs loops are left intact. Because of this difference, tufted rugs tend to shed more easily than others.

Flat-woven and braided rugs differ from all other rug types because they lack a pile. Flat-woven rugs are created by weaving yarns into a pattern or design. Braided rugs are as the name suggests made with yarns that are braided into one long rope and then sewn together in a spiral.

Since these rugs are reversible, owners can continually flip their rug to extend its life!

While choosing a rug for your living space may seem overwhelming, being an educated buyer helps prepare you for the experience. Researching construction styles and their benefits will guide you as you search for the perfect complementing piece for your home.

It is our hope that customers looking for an area rug in the greater Louisville areaKentucky, Ohio, and Indiana and beyond will benefit from this wealth of information developed by David Khazai, a fifth-generation rug professional in wholesale and retail rug sales.
