Planning a vacation in London? Make sure not to miss out on these top ten London attractions. London is the capital city of England and the United Kingdom. Within London, tourists will find an abundant amount of fun attractions. London has enjoyed an incredibly long history dating back to over two thousand years ago when Romans first settled along the River Thames and form a city. Along the way, they've managed to create some wonderful landmarks that all visitors should see.

1. River Thames is the longest river in London, England, and the UK. It flows right through London. Along the river, visitors will find landmarks like the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, St Paul's Cathedral, and the London Eye. It's 215 miles in length and has many historically important landmarks located on its embankment. Visitors should think about walking along the river to enjoy what London has to offer. If you have time, consider having lunch at one of the many restaurants with a river view.

2. London Eye is the tallest ferris wheel in the United Kingdom. It's located between the River Thames and Jubilee Gardens. If your trip to London is during New Years, the London Eye is the city's primary celebration location. At the top of the giant ferris wheel, thrill seekers are 443 feet high into the sky and will have fantastic views of central London. Consider going for a spin with your family or significant other! This ferris wheel is especially romantic at night, when it lights up the night sky with blue lights.

3. British Museum is a history and art museum that has a huge collection of historically significant artifacts from several locations around the world. Some famous relics you'll recognize include the Rosetta Stone, Elgin Marbles, and Beowulf manuscript. The British Museum's permanent collection spans multiple eras, visitors will learn plenty about ancient civilizations. Perhaps most importantly, the British Museum is completely free to see! This makes it ideal for budget travelers. The British Museum holds over eight million pieces.

4. Buckingham Palace was constructed back in 1705 as a residence for the royal family. Before your trip, be sure to check the palace's calendar as they're not always open for tours every day of the year. During the Changing of the Guard ceremony, palace guards dismount and exchange their horses. Outside of the palace, the Changing of the Guard ceremony takes place once a day. Inside Buckingham Palace, visitors learn about the state rooms and the Queen's art gallery. The palace also serves as a conference for state officials of the country.

5. Westminster Abbey is a popular church where visitors can learn more about England's royal history and see a significant historic landmark. This particular building was constructed in 970. Westminster Abbey served as the venue for coronations and royal weddings. Inside Westminster Abbey, you'll find several coronation relics and royal tombs.

6. River Thames Cruise is an ideal way to quickly soak in the city. Don't worry, you won't get wet. Most cruises are relaxing and have an open top deck. That means nothing will get in the way of your photos. There are plenty of significant landmarks along the River Thames. On the cruise, expect to have unique views of the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, London Eye, and St Paul's Cathedral. Cruises are a great way to get introduced to the city since a professional tour guide will teach you about the historically significant landmarks as you pass them. Later on in the day, you can visit each one individually.

7. Tower of London is officially named Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress and was built almost in 1078. Currently, the Tower of London serves as home and protector to the crown jewels. Visitors interested in the medieval ages should see the Tower of London. Previously, the Tower of London has served as an armoury, treasury, and prison.

8. Big Ben is the iconic clock tower in London. It's actually the nickname for the Elizabeth Tower, the official name of the tower. Plan your schedule to visit the clock tower to hear the main bell ring and the secondary bells chime. The secondary bells chime every four times an hour whereas the main bell rings once every hour. Big Ben was constructed in 1858 and stands at 315 feet tall. The main bell weights 13.5 tons and was originally named Big Ben, before the name caught on and became synonymous with the whole tower. Big Ben actually has a slight slant to it, which may be why they closed it off for tourists. You can only walk up the tower if you're a UK resident, and only with an appointment.

9. Tower Bridge is the famous suspension bridge that crosses the River Thames. It's often confused with London Bridge which is directly across from it. Over 40,000 pedestrians and car drivers go cross the bridge annually. The Tower Bridge Exhibition is offered to tourists, which takes them inside the tower to see the bridge's Victorian era steam engine room. It's generally worth the admission price if it's your first time in London. Tower Bridge was built in 1886.

10. St Paul's Cathedral was constructed in the 17th century, although a previous church was built on this site centuries ago in 604. Why is St Paul's Cathedral so popular amongst tourists and London residents alike? The gorgeous view! Everyone is welcome to climb up the dome for an amazing, unobstructed view of London. St Paul's Cathedral was constructed on top of Ludgate Hill, the tallest hill in Central London, giving it the best view in the city.
