Up until a few months ago when you visited your local lighting or DIY store their selection of LED down lights was very limited. However these are becoming much more common now as they have been designed so that they are capable of putting in place of halogen down lights without the need for any specific attachments.
Even though the selection of LED lights for use in the home has grown substantially it is important that you don't rush into buying them. It is far better if you begin by only replacing lights in those appliances in your home that will allow you to do so. So in order to be able to do this it is a good idea to understand a little bit more about LED home lights.
Although you can automatically switch from halogen down lights to the LED kind what may be putting you off like so many others is the cost. Yes you will discover that these types of down lights do cost considerably more. However although the initial cost of purchase may seem high there are plenty of reasons for replacing your current halogen down lights with them. Below we take a look at just what some of these reasons are.
Reason 1 - Last Longer
A typical LED down light bulb is capable of running for up to 25,000 hours before the need to replace it. Whereas when it comes to halogen lights these on average will only run for around 1,000 hours before they have to be replaced. So of course you will need to buy 25 halogen bulbs against just one LED bulb.
Reason 2 - Don't Consume So Much Power
When it comes to consumption of power you will find that the LED needs far less than the halogen kind. In fact when it comes to led down lights they use only a tenth of the power to produce the light compared to a halogen one. So of course installation of such lights means that your electricity bills in the future will be a great deal less.
For example to power a 5 watt LED light over its lifetime will cost around $12.50 whereas when it comes to a 50 watt halogen light this will cost around $125 to run. So you will end up making a net saving of $112.50 by installing LED down lights in your home instead of the halogen kind.
Reason 3 - Heat Produced
As LED down lights use a 10th of the power to provide them with energy they don't heat up as much like halogen ones will. So of course the risk of them overheating and causing damage to your home or even starting a fire is greatly reduced. Plus of course there is far less risk of these types of lights popping whereas this is a very big risk when it comes to halogen style down lights.
Above we have taken a look at just some of the reasons why you should be seriously considering replacing your current halogen down lights with LED ones. Okay the initial cost of purchasing LED down lights seems high but as already shown you won't need to replace them so often. Also you don't have to replace every single light in your home with these types instead why not change just one or two and see how effective they are, then over time as and when you can replace others.
