Most people instinctively know that crime can happen everywhere, yet spend their lives assuming that crime will never affect them personally. Crimes only happen to "other people," right? Regardless of where you live or spend your time, robberies, home burglaries, carjacking, domestic violence, assaults, and a range of other crimes are all possibilities that you must be aware of.
Too many people think that if something should happen to them, the police will protect them. The truth is, in your time of need it will be up to you to defend yourself. If the police aren't there while the crime is in progress, they won't be able to stop it. In this situation, what are you supposed to do? In this case, you are your own first line of defense. Here are three tips to keep in mind to ensure your safety:
1. Be proactive. Understand that at some point in your life, you may be confronted by a criminal. Instead of waiting for this to happen, prepare for it. Enroll in self defense classes and arm yourself with a stun gun, a canister of pepper spray, or another self defense device. Make your home more secure with home safety alarms and other products. Take these steps now, because it'll be too late to take them when you become the victim of a crime.
2. Practice your techniques. Even those who do prepare by purchasing self defense devices still think that the time to use them is a long ways off. In order to be prepared to fight back, it is necessary to prepare yourself for the possibility. This means learning how to use your TASER device and practicing your self defense moves. You may feel silly practicing against a "dummy," but your practice can really pay off during the first few seconds of a home invasion or an assault, when your actions matter most. When this happens, you want to be able to respond instinctively, not be left standing there incapable to make a move.
3. Be aware of your surroundings. You don't have to be paranoid, but you do need to be aware of what's going on around you. Be suspicious of strangers approaching you, or dark areas where a potential attacker could hide. Know when you're getting yourself in a situation that may be unsafe. If you know an attack is possible or that one is about to happen, you'll have a few extra seconds to grab your pepper spray and be ready to fight back. Always carry your self defense devices with you, since you never know when you'll need to defend yourself.
Follow these three tips, and you'll be off to a good start to defending yourself against crime. Always remember that you need to rely on yourself for self defense. When it comes to defending yourself, is up to you to be proactive, be practiced, and be aware. As your own line of self defense, take your safety into your own hands by preparing mentally and physically for the possibility that you will need to defend yourself.
