After a hard day's work, you like to lather up in a nice warm shower, where everything is all cool and calm. But after showering, itchiness, dryness and the weird feeling of not being quite as clean as you want to be is still there.
This can be blamed on hard water, which may have remnants of different chemical deposits from the water source, such as chlorine used to clean the water. This is where filter shower heads are useful, because they play the great role of further cleaning the water by removing impurities that was pumped out by the shower.
Filter shower headshave granules of activated carbon, usually obtained from charcoal or coal, but have been processed to become more porous and increase in surface area. These filter shower heads that have carbon particles in them work through a process called adsorption, wherein the present chemical molecules, which is usually smaller than a water molecule, gets trapped on the surface of a filtering medium, in this case, the charcoal. Chemicals such as chlorine are captured by the charcoal as water passes over the granules.
But first, a little history lesson. During the First World War, mustard gas containing chlorine was used as a chemical weapon by the Germans. The mask that soldiers used to protect themselves contained carbon, which stopped chlorine fumes from getting inhaled. This is the same technology applied to filter shower heads.
Different professions such as beauty experts, hairdressers, as well as dermatologists all give praise to filter shower heads because they all have seen the havoc that chlorine and chloramines wreak, such as drying out the natural oils present in hair and skin. Excessive dryness of the skin can contribute to wrinkling and sagging, not to mention eczema and dermatitis, as well as other skin problems. Chlorine may also contribute to acne as it changes the skin's natural pH levels, wherein the slight acidity of the skin's pH level would normally keep acne bacteria at bay. But other than improving the skin and hair, what are the other benefits of filter shower heads?
Filter shower headscan be very beneficial to people with respiratory problems, and this is because chlorine fumes can trigger and even worsen asthma attacks, as well as endanger the health of those without asthma. Filter shower heads can also be used in line with cancer prevention, wherein a good amount of research was done to determine that people can protect themselves from all kinds of cancer by avoiding one's exposure to chemical compounds, like those that are minutely found during hot baths, wherein when heated, chlorine converts itself to chloroform gas that can be inhaled if showering with unfiltered water.
Try showering if you still doubt the usefulness of filter shower heads. If you feel any itch, or even if your hair feels dry and frizzy after towel-drying it, then you should probably head on to the nearest bed and bath store to purchase a filter. Because whatever happens, do keep in mind that it is better to be safe than sorry, and that prevention is a whole lot better than a cure.
