Why put up a fence around your property? There are many possible motivations behind this decision. Perhaps you're tired of people cutting across your lawn. Maybe you want to lounge on the grass in peace. Perhaps you feel the need to keep your children within your property, or the neighbor's dog out. Still others feel that fencing improves both the safety and privacy of their home.
Regardless of your reasons for installing fencing around your property, be sure to consider the impact of this decision on your home security. Most people automatically assume that a fence improves their home security. The increased privacy of fencing is both a good thing and a bad thing. While a tall and sturdy fence with a locked gate may keep some criminals out, on the other hand a tall fence provides the cover a criminal needs to break into your home without anyone catching them. If you're installing a fence because you're worried about home security, you may be better served by surveillance cameras, motion activated lights, and similar home security devices, unless you wish to build a tall and impenetrable fence around your property.
A fence tends to add a false sense of security, and too many homeowners become lax on their other security measures after installing a fence. Remember, a fence only serves to stop a burglar from getting inside your property. Once they've breached the fence, don't give them free access to the home by leaving your doors and windows unlocked or failing to protect them adequately.
A fence can be designed to keep people, pets, and things in, or it can be designed to keep people out. A good fence may serve both purposes. The overall security of a fence typically comes down to the height and materials chosen. Though the most popular types of fencing material are wood and chain link, there are other options. If you're concerned about a burglar taking cover behind your fence, consider a chain-link or open lattice style, or build a shorter fence, like the classic white picket fence.
Regardless of the type of fence you choose to build, there are steps you can take to make the perimeter of your property as secure as possible. For example, make sure that the gate closes and locks securely. Consider installing a motion detector, surveillance camera, or dummy camera near the gate. These give the impression that the entrance is being watched even if it's not and are likely to ward away criminals considering breaking into your home.
Keeping a fence safe goes beyond the use of home security devices. Carefully consider the location of trees and bushes so that they are not planted to provide cover for a burglar or a way to climb up and over the fence. Regularly inspect the condition of your fence, and replace damaged portions quickly. Broken fencing sections may become a hazard for pets or children, or make it easier for a burglar to enter your property.
