Every spring farmers and urban dwellers spray their yards with tons of artificial fertilizers. This of course makes for acres of beautiful green grass, weed free of course and makes for an easier way to prepare fields for cultivation. But what most people arent aware of is that not all of this fertilizer remains in the ground where it is placed. A lot of it is washed away with spring storms in the storms drains. Most storm drains eventually dump into a creek or stream. As we all know from elementary school geography. All creeks and streams flow into ever widening rivers of water and ultimately into the ocean.

This matters because the increased levels of nutrients in the ocean causes algae to grow and reproduce out of control. This creates a phenomenon better known as the red tides in the oceans. It creates algal blooms in river as well. Red tides deplete the water of oxygen thus causing fish and other marine animals to suffocate. Red tides also block sunlight from penetrating into the water, thus killing plant life below and starving herbivorous fish and other marine animals. As you can imagine this creates a chain of events leading right up to people. Once the fish begin to die those that feed on the fish begin to starve, including larger fish, marine mammals. We in turn are deprived of a major food source. While all of this is bad it does not directly impact our lives since we have alternate source of food upon which to rely.

But wait, red tides have another more dire weapon. A tiny, microscopic animal associated with red tides releases a poison, known in the scientific community as brevetoxin. Sadly, it is this poison that is blamed for the death of more manatees in 2005 than in any other year. This already terribly endangered animal has been placed into an even more dire situation by inhaling the toxin in its in the water. This causes bronchitis or asthma-like symptoms. Whats more is the brevetoxin has been found to infiltrate humans through the consumption of shellfish. Just recently, scientists associated a sharp rise in the influx of people admitted to the hospital with asthma and bronchitis with occurrence of red tide in the region, meaning that humans can be affected by brevetoxin and red tide in the same way that mammals are.

Red tide can be alleviated through the use of natural fertilizers like cow manure or earthworm casings. Supporting organic farmers by purchasing organic foods and products may help to encourage other farmers to take up the green revolution and help to preserve the manatee for the future and ourselves as well.
