During the last several years, the healthcare industry has boomed, growing twice as fast as the national economy and generating a high demand for qualified medical professionals. With approximately 78 million baby boomers turning age 65 or older by 2030, the need for healthcare will be higher than ever. Therefore, the expansive growth rate of this field can be expected to continue for years into the future.

A career in healthcare can be very lucrative. Before embarking down that path, however, it may be useful to ask yourself some questions about your abilities, needs, and desires to determine whether you are well-matched for this type of employment. For example:

Do you enjoy working with people? Some healthcare positions, such as nurses, pediatricians, and physical therapists, necessitate a warm and empathetic personality, while others, such as lab technicians, pathologists, and administrators, have little to no contact with patients.

Do you like science? To prepare for many medical careers, you must be a strong science student and complete demanding, intensive coursework in chemistry, physics, and biology.

How comfortable are you in a healthcare setting? You will probably spend a significant amount of time with people who are sick, disabled, or dying.

How do you handle stress? Healthcare often requires dealing with emergencies and life-or-death decisions on a daily basis.

What type of life/work balance are you looking for? Along with the emergencies come long hours and significant responsibility that can make it difficult to leave the job at work. Although a medical career can be very rewarding, it also requires a great deal of commitment, endurance, and hard work.

Are you a team player? Healthcare is a group activity in which a patients recovery depends not only upon how well each team member performs his or her specific function, but also on how well the team communicates and collaborates as a whole.

How will you obtain the required education and training? Some medical jobs, such as doctor or high-level nurse, require degrees, certifications, and training, and thus involve a significant investment of both time and money.

Are you willing to stay current on developments in your field? In order to provide patients with the best care possible, you will need to continue studying and learning throughout your career to stay abreast of new technology, advanced procedures, emerging treatments, and even new diseases.

If you believe your skills, strengths, and personality make you a good fit for a job in healthcare, there are many roles with varying educational and experience requirements to explore. Some of the rising careers you might consider include:

Healthcare Administrator Responsible to keep a facility running smoothly and oversee the staff, a healthcare administrator is a leader who typically works behind the scenes. Duties may include keeping abreast of new laws and regulations, handling the financial processes of the clinic, supervising assistants, and reporting to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Medical Assistant An administrative option with plenty of opportunities to interact with patients and no formal educational requirements, a career as medical assistant involves performing office tasks on behalf of healthcare practitioners, scheduling appointments, preparing lab tests, and taking patient histories.

Medical Records and Health Information Technician By managing and organizing data, reviewing patient records, assessing patient outcomes, and providing patient confidentiality, a medical records and health information technician plays an important, behind-the-scenes role in keeping an office up and running.

Dental Assistant Essentially a dentists right hand, a dental assistant assists the doctor during procedures, educates patients on proper dental care, schedules appointments, and processes billing and insurance.

Registered Nurse A registered nurse provides and coordinates various aspects of patient care, and thus interacts with patients on a daily basis.

Pharmacy Technician Pharmacy technicians assist pharmacists by filling prescriptions, counting tablets, mixing medications, answering telephones, and accepting payments from customers.

As a healthcare professional, you will have a fast-paced, exciting career that provides you with the opportunity to make an impact and change lives. You can also expect competitive earning potential along with job security and stability over the coming years.
