A Prevention of Falls training program is uniquely designed for employees to help them avoid falls and injury by educating them about the risk factors for falls. The JCAHO or Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organization incorporates this training as part of safety maintenance in the healthcare organization. Aside from considering patients risks for falling, organizations also train employees to be careful and avoid falls themselves.
A prevention of falls training program is essential for all employees as it enables them to be aware of the risks and treatment of falls. In short, when attending Prevention of falls training, students will learn how to:
 Define a fall
Identify employees who are most at risk for falls
 Assess the consequences of falls
Identify physical and emotional causes for falls
Determine environmental hazards related to falls
Identify ways to reduce the chances of falling
 React appropriately when someone falls
It is the responsibility of the employer to provide training to employees about how to use equipment like scaffolds and ladders in a safe manner and how to identify and report hazards. OSHA or Occupational Safety and Health Administration has developed several resources available on the internet. Employers can utilize these resources to inform their employees about protective measures especially during construction. To prevent falls, employees need to be aware of how to use the equipment properly.
Scaffold Safety: When using scaffolds, employees must follow these precautionary measures:
- When setting up the scaffold, finish doing all the guardrails and ensure that footing is stable.
- Make sure it is easy to get to the scaffold.
- Before use, someone who is competent must inspect it.
- Never stand on the guardrails.
- Ladders must never used on a scaffold.
Ladder Safety: While using ladders employees must follow safety measures such as:
- Stand the ladder on a level area.
- Make sure there are three points of contact.
- Make sure you are always facing the ladder.
- Never overreach when you are on the ladder.
- Never walk the ladder.
Roof Safety: These are the precautions to follow when on top of a roof:
- Know how to protection equipment.
- Make sure you have a harness that fits well.
- Always be connected to a stable point with the harness.
- Make sure all the points are fastened securely.
- Be aware of any openings, holes, or skylight.
- Never sit on or walk close to any openings.
The main objective of prevention of falls training program is to educate employees so that they are aware of what can cause falls and what to do when someone falls. Knowing this, they will not only be able to protect others but themselves also. This will result in a significant decrease in falls in the workplace. Business owners as well as workers and others are invited to learn more by simply heading online. Checking with reputable places that offer educational materials with online classes can help save lives.
