Good morning all!

I've been having some fun making this, with lots of help of course! Shout outs to Ilan Moyer, Nick Chelyapov, and Danger! Awesome!. It's been pointed out that this device is not *really* steampunk, because of course it actually works... Enjoy!

P.S. there is one thing "wrong" with the spectrometer shown in the video -- one last part is still being shipped but we didn't want to hold up the filming. I'll ship you a $35 spectrometer kit if you can figure it out!

Project Update #6: Limited "steampunk edition" spectrometer and iPhotometer 5 video

OK, so we've gotten a little silly in the past few days and in that spirit we've made designed more spectrometer. It's brass. It's wood. It's engraved. But it's functionally identical to our $300 countertop model, and has the same imaging chamber as our $35 kit. But it really is complete vanity, so we're offering 5 of them for $1000 each to help support the Public Lab nonprofit. See more photos here.

You'll want to watch the video (also on YouTube), below, because we got especially silly and spoofed the iPhone 5 release video. We're not really calling this the iPhotometer 5, but we just had to try to sound as design-drunk as Jony Ive & company. So enjoy the shallow focus!

Is this what happens when you have an MIT Fab Lab at your disposal? ;)

It's awesome.

Cheers,

The spectrometer does have a rather serious flaw, but it took a while to notice because I was dazzled by all the brass and laser engraving. Well played.

The prism at the bottom of the imaging chamber is missing

Hilarious. A little geek humor is such a great way to start the day!

Don't have 1000$ slumbering around or I would get one...

Oh and what's missing is an extension on the sensor housing, as it doesn't reach out far enough over the light source.
I actually allready pledged for a 35$ spectrometer kit, so.. if I am right and I won, just add the camera and leave the rest, so I can experiment medieval style wit it :)

Cheers!

So Spacecaptain aka Fernando actually emailed in first (see below). I've sent him a spectrometer kit already! Indeed, the last piece of brass pipe has just arrived and without it, the image chamber wasn't actually lined up with the lamp.

In other news, there were some pretty bad typos in the first sentence of the update. Too bad I already sent it to over 1000 people! :-P  But i went ahead and fixed it anyways.
