Interested in helping to lead a Grassroots Mapping Workshop in your area?
Based on the success of the kickstarter there are 300+ balloon mappers who will be getting started with Grassroots Mapping over the next month. We thought why not make an event of it and plan our own version of March Madness to hold local training events and workshop anywhere Balloon Mappers are able to congregate?
To facilitate this process we've started a March Mapping Madness<http://publiclaboratory.org/wiki/march-mapping-madness> Wiki Page (http://publiclaboratory.org/wiki/march-mapping-madness). If you are interested in participating in or helping to organize one of these events (or in coordinating the events generally) please add you name and email to that page! We are also going to be organizing a set of online sessions focused on skill building with MapKnitter, our map making software, that anyone is welcome to participate in.
Based on where we are sending balloon mapping kits, we are hoping to have workshops in at least these areas:
*Austin, TX*
*Boston, MA** *
*Chicago, IL*
*Washington D.C.*
*Philadelphia, PA*
*Los Angles, CA*
*San Francisco, CA*
*Seattle, WA*
*North Carolina*
*Toronto*
*Berlin*
*Zurich*
*Somewhere in the Netherlands*
*Portland, OR*
*Asheville, NC - already planned for *March 31st - Saturday 10 AM
*And a Virtual meeting for those outside of these areas.* PLOTS staff will help organizers find locations to map, get kits and helium together as well as help set up wiki pages for each local site like the one occurring in the New York region: http://publiclaboratory.org/wiki/march-mapping-madness-ny-nj-ct
Looking forward to making this a month of Balloon Flying, Shutter Snapping, Image Stitching, Mapping Madness!
It looks like we may have quite a bit of interest in Davis, CA, just from a survey of geographers on campus at UC Davis. I suspect we may have more interest from the campus community as a whole, the city of Davis, and Sacramento folks (Sacramento is about 20 minutes away) if I ask around. Should I add a listing for Davis/Sacramento to the wiki page? Also I was wondering how many people makes a good number for a mapping workshop?

Great idea Manuel. I'll look at the list of new grassroots mappers and get back to you. Meanwhile could you add Mexico City as a suggested site for a workshop to the March Mapping Madness Page? http://publiclaboratory.org/madness
Also perhaps Stewart and Adam who have spent time with Public Lab in Mexico City have some ideas on who else might be interested in that area?
Looking forward to helping pull together a mapping event near you!

Hey all - I was thinking -- so many people on this list have led workshops -- we should start compiling some notes and tips on how to lead a balloon mapping workshop, where we can help others get started. I drafted a page with whatever I could think of, but I'm sure there are a lot more ideas/suggestions/resources out there which we can add in.
Everyone -- if you've led a workshop before, can you go in there and add whatever info you think is useful for someone just starting out? If you have not led before, and have questions, feel free to ask here, or to put your questions in that wiki page. Also, everyone does it differently so feel free to expand or change what others have added.
