I have an email subscriber to my feed (feeds2.feedburner.com/
invivoblog) that describes the following problem:

Today’s In Vivo Blog [email] just came in – it caused my other apps to
freeze for 10 seconds while Outlook was receiving it (i.e., even
before it appeared in my inbox). And then it took me 84 seconds (I
counted really slowly) for the Blog email to open. And then when I
went to print this email, my computer gave the message (I now always
get with In Vivo Emails): “Contacting \\blogger.googleusercontact.
for information”.

He says that for the past week or so the email causes his computer to
hang up and he has to reboot. No other email subscriber has raised
this issue (we have several thousand).

Any thoughts / suggestions on what to tell the subscriber?

I am having this exact problem, same message, same hang. -- Although I
will say this happens in Outlook 2007, but not when I read the email
msg in Thunderbird.

I am assuming that somewhere in the rss, is a link to an image to
something on blogger.googleusercontact.??? (dot com?) that can't be
resolved, so Outlook hangs.

Sure hope they fix this soon!

I have found the culprit. Looking at the html source of the email
that Feedburner sends, at the bottom of the post (the rss of your
website) it has this code:

<div class=3D"blogger-post-footer"><img width=3D'1' height=3D'1'
src=3D=
'//blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/
3526601361014599851-84343643078307=
09056?l=3Dwww.yoursitee.com'/></div>

Now .. Outlook is trying to load an image from //
blogger.googleusercontent.com -- looks like the programmer forgot the
http: because .. Outlook is going to look for a computer on YOUR LAN
that equals //blogger.googleusercontent.com .. finding none, it will
hang as Windows goes about looking for that PC.

After a good minute or two, control will return to Outlook, but most
people will get think their machine is frozen far before that.

ATTENTION FEEDBURNER IT STAFF: You have a bug. Please fix it!!!

I also heard from a subscriber (with a mac, though) that this was
happening, so I also subscribed and found that it happens with my
outlook 2007, too. Is there any way to fix it ourselves? Or to make
sure that the feedburner people fix it?

This is really pissing me off. Every one who opens a feeburner email
in Outlook 2007 is getting hung. When will this be fixed? Ever?
Hello??

Getting the same problem. Outlook hangs when opening feedburner
email. Is there any way other than this group discussion to get
google/feedburner to do anything to fix this?

Hi - this actually appears to be a Blogger issue, not a FeedBurner
issue. That image URL is referencing a Blogger image, and the URL was
changed to accommodate both http:// and https:// environments (several
users had complained). Unfortunately, it appears that Outlook has a
bug in dealing with // as a URL string. We're looking into it, I'll
report back.

Thanks to this thread FeedBlitz has deployed a workaround to eliminate
this issue for emails powered by FeedBlitz -

Has there been any resolution on this? My Feedburner email
subscribers are still having the Outlook hanging problem.

Does anyone know anything more about getting this resolved? I can't
find any other reference to the problem apart from here and it isn't
on 'Known Issues for Blogger' (http://knownissues.blogspot.com) as far
as I can see.

I'm really getting desperate - my subscribers are cancelling to avoid
the problem.

This problem persists. Google/Feedburner apparently don't care.

I'm having more complaints as well. As Feedblitz seems to have
implemented a work-around, it maybe time to look into alternatives for
Feedburner. I don't particularly care whether the problem is with
Blogger or Feedburner, as they are both owned by Google.

I am still getting this terrible problem too.. looked for ages to see
why it was happening. Is there anyone else we can complain to?

I found a work-around.

I created a Yahoo Pipe that adds the "http:" in front of the "//
blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/..." and replaced the original
feed in Feedburner with the corrected Yahoo Pipes feed. This seems to
work.

You can find an example of the pipe here:
http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.info?_id=cb15c4a9d46b556bcda11a5e197642b4

It uses the Regex module to do a search/replace and add the "http:"

Don't forget to ping Feedburner after you make the change to get it to
refresh the feed.

Hopefully this won't introduce any other errors or problems, but so
far, so good.

We are experiencing similar problems with our readers who use Outlook
as their primary email client. It would be great if Feedburner/
Blogger could just fix the formatting bug.

asgordon-

That's an awesome idea .. I copied your pipe and replaced it with my
blogspot feed and it appeared to work great.

Unfortunately, when I replaced the feed in feedburner with the new
piped one, Feedburner says "The URL does not appear to reference a
valid XML file. We encountered the following problem: Unknown feed
format encountered (The root element is [Element: <html/>])"

.. and doesn't accept the change in feed. Still screwed!

Thanks for the suggestion, though.

I sent an email to Rick Klau who is from blogger and posted in this
thread 6 days ago .. asked him for an update, and so far, he's blown
me off. No response.

Honestly, I would think it would take a programmer about 3 minutes to
fix this problem. What is the hold up?

I am having the same problem with the feed from our blog hanging up in
Outlook. I am adding my complaint hoping Feedburner or Blogger will
take notice and fix the problem.

What is the fix for this issue? I am still not able to get any
feedburner RSS feeds to open in Outlook 2007.
