Subject: dhclient
I'm trying to turn on dhclient in openwrt backfire that I built.  Its
for a Clear wimax usb stick.

So far, I can't get dnsmasq to admit to having a dhcp client - but I'm
hoping I haven't ask correctly.
In the make menuconfig, I don't see a dhclient to include.

So what am I doing wrong?

The dhcp client in openwrt is called udhcpc (pretty sure this is part
of busybox).  You should be able to use the uci configuration system
to configure that interface.  Are you sure it isn't doing some pppoe
type thing?

Look in /etc/config/network and /etc/config/dhcp for examples of
normal interface configuration.  Look here for the uci network
configuration documentation:

  http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/uci/network

Be aware that OpenWrt adds a layer of interface naming (e.g. lan or
wan or ???) on top of the linux interface names (eth0, wlan0, etc).
You could have a stanza called "config interface wimax" and add the
linux interface name as an option under that: "option ifname 'ppp0'"
or whatever.  Also, I'd suggest to try it in a linux laptop and see
how the laptop configures it.

Hi Ted:

I haven't a clue what you need to do to make the Clear WiMax stick work
with openwrt, but do you want to try my Cisco E-4200 instead? It has a usb
socket and has both 2.4 and 5 Ghz channels with Full 3x3 MIMO.

I don't have a Clear stick that has the built-in software, but if you want
to test it out and use it for a few months, that works for me. I'd like to
use that as my solar powered system since their routers are only $89
refurbished from Cisco.

It's supposed to work with DD-WRT:

Excellent.  That worked!  Now my little Alix box is a (still incomplete)
mobile hotspot.
Thanks.

Sam-
That's a generous offer.  I don't know if the necessary driver is on the
cisco E4200 or not.  But it may be easy to check.  Just plug it in and see.
When building the version of OpenWRT that it is running on, I had to
select the cdc ethernet driver to add.  Where as Ubuntu 10.4 already had
it.  So its isn't obvious whether the cisco has it or not.
Then there is the question of whether it could be loaded onto the cisco
if it wasn't already there.  Dunno.  I've never worked with this kind of
router.
We could run a test at a PTP weekly.  Are you planning on attending any
time soon?  Otherwise, we live in the same town...

I figured my earlier Clear USB modem wouldn't work. I'm worried I'd brick
my Cisco, but if you want to try, I'd give you absolution. Maybe I'll bring
it down at the next monthly.
