Thanks Erik
I think the versions of ptmender and ptstitcher I was running may be at 
fault.  I believe they came with Hugin and are perhaps 'new improved' ones 
built on libpano13.  Anyhow, the 2007 builds (against libpano12) 
distributed by Max Lyons both produce blended panos when run from PTGui 
9.1.5.
