Subject: RAID0 Partition on unallocated space on Windows 7 install

OK, finally managed to install Windows 7 on newly build computer, I am a
Mac guy, so I am pretty amaized at myself! :) Here is the hardware list —

Part list:
Intel Core i7-3820 Sandy Bridge-E 3.6GHz
ASRock X79 Extreme6 Mother Board
G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 64GB DDR3 1600
EVGA GeForce GTX 550 Ti 2GB Graphics Card
2 Seagate Barracuda ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM

Installed windows 7 on a partition of 250GB of 3 TB RAID0, rest of it is
unallocated. I don't know how to created couple of new partition on the
same RAID0 drive. Can some one point me to right direction please?

Thanks

Roy, just wondering ... did you create a striped volume in windows 7 for
the raid0 or did you use the hardware raid on the board (sata 3 connectors
3_0 and 3_1)  - might make a difference in the answer to your question. I
did a Win7 stripe on two ssd units for the full volume sizes so I don't
have the same configuration.  It should be easy what you want to do but I
don't even want to go back into my disk management to see for fear I'll
hurt something!

Congrats on your build, sounds like a great system.

But :-) why no SSD drives?

I would have setup a two drive raid-0 for you os and then used the 3 tb for storage.

I would also, if $$$ permitted, have added another 2 SSDs for scratch disk also in raid.
And the data storage would be a 4 drive RAID-10

This would make your system flow better

Anyway just my $.02

I hope you are happy with it, you can always add later

Henrik

Hi Bob

First off, let me thank you for helping me with hardware selection, made my
life lot easier. :) I did a hardware setup in BIOS, with SATA3- 3_0 and
3_1, not within Windows. I don't even know how to do it! Curious, how do
you do it?

Since I did in BIOS, the unallocated space don't even show up in drive
management! Any idea?

Hi Henrik

I am going with Joergen's recommendation
(https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!topic/ptgui/6SovW0CsN60),
the SSD 240GB will be used PTGui temp files and Photoshop scrach disk.

I saw your post on another forum with the screenshot.  Amazing how quickly
google picks this up.  I think what you need to do is to select Create Raid
Volume and that should allow you to create another raid volume with the
remaining space. You can then repeat that if you want two additional raid
volumes. I think they can only be raid but don't quote me.

The Intel Rapid Storage Technology software is available from Intel and
possibly on the Asrock site.  That can be used to perform in Win7 what you
have done in Bios but it is unclear to me whether you have to enable the
first raid in Bios before you can use the Intel RST software within the OS.

Make sure you backup that OS volume if you have anything of value on it.

Just keep in mind that some/most of my recommendations were geared towards
budget computing... now that SSDs have become much cheaper ($330 for 480 GB
is still falling), it's starting to make sense to use SSD for almost
everything but long term storage...

Hi Roy,
I would've really interested in hearing how the performance is on your new system.

When you get a moment, could you run the PTGui speedtest please

Thanks

Henrik

Hi Henrik

I was out of town, sorry for the delay. I will post performance/time here
when I get a chance to run some test. I am working on Orion/Merlin head
side by side, building the PC. It will be a while before I can do the test
tho.
