Problems With Getting Exposure Fusion To Adjust For Sun Streaks and Blue Sky for Interior Room Shoot

I am in the process of trying to use PTGUI’s (Version 8.1.5) Exposure Fusion feature to make a flattened HDR image of a room that I photographed.   To create the images I bracketed them by adjusting the shutter speed making sure that the darkest dark (deep shadows) and brightest areas (blue sky in window and sun streaks on the floor) were captured.   Once I loaded all the images and performed the steps in Support FAQ 5.13 I then proceeded to the HDR Exposure Fusion Tab.

My problem is that I never saw my deep blue sky and the sun streaks on the floor were blown out despite my capturing the full range of images.

Here is the full write up of the steps I took and the results.

Here are the images that I used to try and create an HDR.

Right now I'm really trying to get this to work with PTGUI without having to purchase more software.  I look forward to using some of your suggestions and help.

Thanks.

Try enfuse GUI. Maybe that would give you a different result.

Hi Ivan,

I think you're running into the limits of what the exposure fusion
algorithm can achieve; you would need to do some retouching in Photoshop
to get the windows darker.

But personally I'd say the result would look a bit unrealistic, the
direct light from the window would be darker than the reflected light in
the room.

Ivan, This is the result of my quick fusion test with your images:

The four fusion settings were 0.49, 2.8, 4, 0.19

Hey John,

Thanks for sharing that.  I found that the overall room exposure  looks ideal at a "Target Brightness" of about .85 and this is viewing on a calibrated monitor.   Do you know how I could increase the brightness of the room but not effect the window and carpet (as seen in your render)?

Ivan, I don't know if the settings can be used to make the adjustments
you require. Otherwise, judicious masking is an alternative
solution. Getting a good, believable balance is not easy.
