Very Basic questions on image quality

Moved up to a Nikon D7000 with 16 mps. I am shooting Jpeg large with
no compression. Once I stitch the pano I save as Tiff and then do any
photoshop. In photoshop I will do any exposure or cloning work. When
finished I sharpen using the high pass filter. Then I save as Tiff and
Jpeg. I keep the files large as possible. The panos I upload are in
the 30 to 40 mb (Jpeg) range. The reason for the post is that the
panos are not as sharp as I expected for a 16 mp sensor. Any feedback
is appreciated.
Will there be that much more detail in a full sensor camera? Will
the resolution on the screen monitor make a big difference? All the
panos look great on the Ipad but sharp only in a narrow band in the
center of the screen on the laptop. Any help is appreciated. I am
almost embarrassed asking in that this seems it is so basic.

Shoot raw and convert to 16bit tiff for the stitch. When you make your cube faces, make them as jpeg. So you only work with jpeg at the very last step.

Hi,
I use to take my pics always in raw.  All pics opened and adjusted together in adobe camera raw,  and I save to tiff.  Stitching in ptgui ( btw i get much better stitching result from tiff indeed jpg) save to tiff.  If i need I use PS again.  I use to convert my eq panos with krpano into interactive panorama (you can config the jpg quality).  Earlier i used mov for the interactive panorama because i think that provide the best quality,   but now i cant use it for multires panos.   Regards.  I.

Most likely not. Depending on the sensor pixel density you might even
get less detail with a full format sensor and the same lens. For details

What is your final equirectangular size in pixels? Byte sizes don't say
anything. What lens do you use?

At what zoom does your panorama look blurred towards the edges. Can you
show an example? Where do you upload your panoramas? An own site or some
panorama service like 360cities?

The size of the pano is 11772 X 5886. I am using a 8mm Sam Yang lens
at f11.

link to the hosted pano as the title of the pano. Was not sure how to
add a link in ge.tt. The pano is on 360cities.

On a side note: when I want to paste a statement or question from a
prior post how do I do it so that I get marks on the left showing its
from another post. I tried to copy and paste but it did not show the

Thanks Ken, Got a little lazy in shooting Raw in that my Photoshop is
out of date and when I download it gets confusing in that I do not see
previews to know how to sort as I download. I have to convert to DNG
first. I am sure there is a way to mark my shots with a jpeg between
raws. As far as cube faces are concerned I do not have experience with
cube faces. I stitch the pano and then edit in Photoshop and save as
Tiff and Jpeg. Then I upload to hosting service (360cities) as a Jpeg.
Where do the cube faces come in to the process. I did convert to html
using PTGui once or twice for my own experimental web site. Could this
this be the home of the cube faces? Thanks

Your pano isn't sharp. I guess 11772 X 5886 is what PTGui gives you if
you choose Maximum Size on Create Panorama tab. This would be fine, if
your source images would be tack sharp. I guess they are not. Place one
of the source images on ge.tt to investigate. An image with both near
foreground and background details would be good. Could be the focus
scale isn't correct or the flange distance is not correct.

Your mail reader should do this. I guess the google web interface
doesn't do it. But I consider it better using a mail reader anyway. I
prefer thunderbird. Some filter rule puts all PTGui messages into a
dedicated folder, and thunderbird allows for a nice, threaded view.
Another rule marks my own messages important and thus the whole thread
is marked that way if it contains own messages...

Here is a frame from the pano. Thanks for bringing it back to basics.
I can see this picture is not sharp at any spot. I am not sure why in
that if the focus was off I would think it would be in focus at some
point. It was shot on a tripod using a remote at f8 at 500th of a
second. I would think at 500th at f8 would be remove and mishaps. I
did do a focus test before with the nikon D70s (6mp) and thought any
softness was due to a lack of pixels in the sensor. I did a test with
the Sam Yang 8mm and a Nikon wide lens. I did not see any difference
between the two at 100% magnification. I can see that a test, with the
new camera, is in order and now that the temp is under 90 degrees I
predict much better results ie for the photographer. Thanks for your
help.

This is a common misconception. A soft lens looks *sharper* on a sensor
with lower pixel density. Same as an image looks sharper if you don't
zoom in to 100%.
