Unfortunately I had to sell my PSP before the videos were made, but
I'd still like to use PSPseq. (I had waited so long too!) I tried the
older version on my EEE pc but found that it was slow and not very
responsive. Ethan, do you have any plans to release the newer 3.0
version? Would there be any possibilities for a OSX release as well?
If not I'll have to start saving my pennies for a Craigslist special/
deal.

*HS: I'm still looking forward to your video demos as well. Keep us up
to date once you get the chance to make some.

It's something I'm thinking about.  The biggest problem I've had is with keyboard compatibility.  Specifically, my version of PSPSeq for windows ran fine on my old laptop (dell d820) but some of the key combos don't work with my new lenovo.  I think it has to do with how the keyboard is phsyically made; not all 3 button combos are possible based on how the keyboard is internall wired.  Also, I get some weird key sticking issues on my new PC.  Still, it's not a huge issue and is definitely good enough to play around with and probably good enough for composition as long as you accept it's not going to run perfectly.

One question I have - would you rather have a version which runs in full-screen that switches to a low resolution (which makes the sequencer nice and big but you can't see anything else) or one that creates a small window that might force you to manually switch to a lower resolution to better see the program?

As for an OSX build, it should be possible but I don' t have access to a mac to compile it on.  Alas.  I could try playing around with compiler options to better optimizing for the eeepc as well.  That would be a nice platform for it.

Sorry to hear you had to sell your PSP.  That's really the best way to play.  Hopefully between PSPSeq and lgpt you'll find a way to get one.  The cheapest PSP I've bought one on craigslist is $80 and I've seen them more recently for closer to $60.

You bring up a good point that I nearly forgot about. I have an older
EEE with the lower resolution screen. Each program tends to work
differently in full screen mode. Personally, I would like the option
of being able to pick. There are software and hardware hacks that let
you run in a different resolution except I find my perfomance tends to
suffer especially in the audio. I mainly use my desktop mac, but when
I'm on the go I've got my iphone and eee pc. Another handy workaround
I found for the keybines that I couldn't accomplish. I used a program
called autohotkey that lets me configure any keystoke I need and
assign it to anything on my keyboard.

Gotcha - I'd probably release both the full screen and windowed versions in different executables for simplicity sake.  I assume you have XP installed on your EEE eh?

Anyways, I'll think about releasing a beta soon for people to play around with and see what I can do to get it to run well on an EEE.  My only concern with all of this is that I feel like the PSP version is so much better than the PC version that PC-PSPSeq is not a great advertisement for the program.  If someone tries the PC version and doesn't like it they're less likely to use the PSP one, even though it might be something they'd really like.

Hey so I figured I'd post a quick build of PSPSeq 3.01 for Windows.  There's two exes; one for running in a 480x272 window and one for full screen (800x600 resolution).  I also included a quick reference sheet for the PC version which I think is up to date for all the key combos.  They're relatively similar to the PSP version.  One difference is that instead of using up/down and left/right on the analog stick for controlling parameters you either hold the left or right mouse button while moving the mouse up or down for up/down and left/right control.  Also the mouse pointer must be in the PSPSeq window for it work - the pointer completely disappears when it's in the window.

Here's a few other other control tips:

1.  Generally speaking the WASD keys simulate the analog stick when using it to jump 8 steps at a time (essentially digital control with the analog pad)
2.  the arrow keys are the digital pad
3.  Y=triangle, G=square, H=X, J=O
4.  /=START and .=SELECT
5.  2=left trigger, 7=right trigger

The user's guide isn't updated with the new controls.  If there's enough interest I might scour it to make it up to date with this build.

Also, for now don't post this around.  I want to see what does and doesn't work and if I even want to make this an official release before it makes it into the wild.

I'm definitely curious to find out if an eeePC can run this without glitching.

Have fun!

Hey did you ever get a controller to work with this?  I'd be curious to hear what exactly it takes to use PSPSeq on a PC with something other than a keyboard.  I guess there are some nice keymapping programs out there but I've never played with any of them.

Lately I've been using PSPSeq to learn how to play the drums.  Works really well for this; either as a metronome or something to create typical drum patterns to play along with or for writing quick and dirty bass lines and playing on top of it.  Plus the portability can't be beat!

FYI I still want to do a 4.00 release; mostly I'd like to follow LGPT's lead on loop/phrase/song construction and add in a mixer/fx stage.  Someday, someday.  Very curious to hear what Sony's plans are for the PSP online store.  If that were opened up for indie developers and they allow non-game apps that would be a nice bit of motivation to put out another release.

And of course, I'm happy to hear whatever music you kids are making these days.  Post away!

Very cool. I don't have access to my psp right now so this will give
me something to play with. The next time I'm at circuit city or
wherever I'll grab a cheap usb controller so I can really jam on it.
Thanks ethan!

So would you change the navigation style to more closely mimic
lsdj/lgpt? Id like to add a +300 for that :D.. It would make
navigation so much more elegant... The sound design is there, but i
think that navigation is really pspseqs Achilles heel. But the sounds
are amazing!

My tood lsit this week is epic, but ill try pspseq ith the joypad to
key utility when i get a chance..

Joy2Key.  Get it, yo.

On a music making note, I just back from a 2 week underway period and started my frst pspseq track in ages and my first dubstep track (oh shit!).  I'm about to go back underway for another two weeks so hopefully I'll get to finish something.  Forgot how much fun FM is.  And I got some stuff flowing in my head that would be a perfect for pspseq so I'll try and do something to post here soon...if anyone wants to hear unfninshed stuff, I'd be obliged to render out what I've got done of the dubstep...

Anyway, got tons of email to catch up on...the rest of the world continues on even when you don't, sadly.
