Changing message type drastically affects other messages?

Hello everyone,
I am in need of modifying a message type completely for a proto that
has many messages.
My question is, would consumers of the proto need to recompile if they
don't use that message type?

No.  It's like dead code -- if people aren't using it, it doesn't matter if it's right.
