JERUSALEM-Suddenly, my city feels again like a war zone. Since the suicide bombings ended in 2005, life in Jerusalem has been for the most part relatively calm. The worst disruptions have been the traffic jams resulting from construction of a light rail, just like in a normal city. But now, again, there are clusters of helmeted border police near the gates of the Old City, black smoke from burning tires in the Arab village across from my porch, young men marching with green Islamist flags toward my neighborhood, ambulances parked at strategic places ready for this city's ultimate nightmare.

They are not unconnected. They are not unconnected at all.
Now, presumably the president didn't want to provoke the rage of the Palestinians. (Although, then again, he might just have anticipated it.) But Palestinian rage is very easy to provoke. Snap your fingers and, there, you have it. You don't even have to rent a mob. It comes free will, so to speak.

Zionism has shown us the way out of the ghetto and given us the option of living in a sovereign Jewish state. That's one reason why I'm a Zionist. Before the term had become a cliché, I wrote in my The Star of Return (1991) that Judaism has undergone a paradigm shift: the Holocaust represents the cruel and murderous end of enforced ghetto existence, Israel the beginning of a new way of being Jewish with new challenges and, alas, new problems. That why, for example, David Hartman when affirming the new reality of Israel was critical of Emil Fackenheim's Holocaust-centred theology.

I am a big Joe Biden fan. The vice president is an indefatigable defender of U.S. interests abroad. So it pains me to say that on his recent trip to Israel, when Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu's government rubbed his nose in some new housing plans for contested East Jerusalem, the vice president missed a chance to send a powerful public signal: He should have snapped his notebook shut, gotten right back on Air Force Two, flown home and left the following scribbled note behind: "Message from America to the Israeli government: Friends don't let friends drive drunk. And right now, you're driving drunk. You think you can embarrass your only true ally in the world, to satisfy some domestic political need, with no consequences? You have lost total contact with reality. Call us when you're serious. We need to focus on building our country."

Yet over a thousand of us came out on Saturday night to demonstrate outside the Prime Minister's official residence in Jerusalem against the cumulative effect of haredi excesses.
