And if anyone is interested in getting up a Buddhist class at the closer to
Austin Lockhart facility, the groundwork is laid. I continue with the
weekly Monday night meditation class but I no longer am attempting any
Buddhist classes, either weekly or monthly. The allocated timeslot is
Sunday, to start about 1:30 (counts starts at 2pm -- if you don't get in
before that you have to wait about an hour). But in theory you could work
with the NEW chaplain there and get a different schedule if you want one.
(Alas Chaplain Toussaint has retired). The attendance lately has been
spotty -- but that happens when the sessions are only monthly, as they have
been, and no one has tended to publicity. It could be salvaged. I don't
have the bandwidth.

My penpal, at the prison in Huntsville TX, is in a small meditation group with Dave Stephens ... but would like some classes in Buddhism.
He says that if someone is interested in teaching there they should call Chaplain Thedford there at 936-291-4200

Well I was just thinking that we might offer "classes" to our pen pals. For example, I have a series of dharma talks that I could share. Since I am a Dharma Teacher in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh, they are all based on my understanding of his teachings of the Buddha's teachings.... as well as my experiences of the Buddha's teachings......but I don't think they would be different from what ya'll teach. Just the form and ceremonies seem to be different and those would be hard to share via mail anyway.
I'm sure ya'll have taught from different sutras, discourses, practices.....so we could just all share our dharma talks with each other then we could share them with our pen pals.
Maybe get 'em organized a little bit first.
something like that.
what do you think?

I've heard of that. Terry, would you please let the group know how a prisoner does that? Then people can suggest that to their penpals.
That would be great. They are always looking for more resources.

It sounds to me like a great idea, though I wonder how there might be a space for interaction. I feel they need to be listened to as much as to be talked to.
What might be possible in that direction?

What about a round-robin letter. (I think that there is another name
for them, but I forget.) The way these letters work is that they are
sent from one person to the next, with the writer forwarding on to the
next name on the list. Then the letter could keep circulating for a
couple of rounds with opportunities for people to respond to each
other. After everyone as responded, then it could go back to the
teacher, for comments and then back out for another round. But one
problem is that I don't know if inmates are able to send mail to each
other. If we could get an exception by the chaplin, then this might
work.
Or another option is to send out something to contemplate to everyone
in the class. Then the inmates respond to the topic of the class and
then the teacher collects the responses, then sends them out to the
group for their response. The down-side of this idea is that there is
a lot of work created for the teacher. Maybe it could be 2-3 of
teachers sharing the load, then it might not be so bad.
