So I just installed Prey on my iPhone 4S with iOS5. Prey is constantly
using my location services (can tell by the icon on the top bar)....
this is the first issue as it will run my battery flat in no time.
Then, I wanted to test to see if the app would work if i lost my
phone. I went to the web control panel and reported it missing. It was
set to report every 10 mins..... i waited 10 mins..... nothing.... i
waited 20 mins..... nothing. It did not work.

I logged into the app on the phone itself and reported it missing from
there, quite why that feature is there I don't even know!! If its
missing you can't log into the phone to report it missing if its
missing! Instantly the phone took a picture of me and the location of
the phone and made a report. I then went back to the web interface to
try reporting it missing again and still no joy....

Do the developers have any feedback or suggestions?

Firstly,
Congrats Prey Team iOS app is finally out :)

The icon in the location bar is unavoidable, live with it or switch to 'Find my iPhone.app' from Apple. As a third party developer Prey can't use the extra features that Apple use such as the ability to turn off the location icon or the ability to activate location services at will even when the app isn't running. Find my iPhone does use these features.

Testing the Prey beta the battery was fine on My 3GS, even with the location services permanently on, I need to test the new release.

Try moving around, I think a change in location is required to prompt Prey into reporting.

Interesting, I've been on the beta team, and didn't get notified that we
released a new version. I'll have to install and see it!

I think the original post was just guessing that it would drain the battery, correct me if I'm wrong.
The Prey beta had an option to turn down the location accuracy. It meant that the device would waste less battery power on getting a location fix. Leave the control panel to 'min accuracy' and see if you can notice any significant battery drain. Turn it up if your device goes missing/ gets stolen.

Apple have seeded iOS 5.1 to developers to fix the real issue some users are seeing with battery life.

My battery drain issues are Prey related not iOS5 issue related. Or
shall I rephrase..... without prey on my battery is fine over 2 days
between charges. With pray on I can watch the battery life tick down.
So it is either related directly to Prey or the interaction Prey has
with iOS5. I couldn't care less about the icon being on but the
battery drain at the moment makes this unusable.

As for reporting..... still having no joy

Fair enough.

I don't know what is happening with your reports, mine started reporting a few minutes after activating in the control panel. FWIW was on wifi, so the phone has an internet connection, are you on wifi or 3G? What is your accuracy setting for the geo module in the control panel? Do you have any other report modules turned on?

I guess you could disable Prey's access to location services until the iOS 5.1 update is available for all users…

Deleting the app for the time being would confirm that it really is Prey draining the battery & not some other iOS 5 issue.

On wi-fi and i have tried all 3 settings. No other report modules
except the picture is on (have tried without it).

I have disabled for now, I will install 5.01 tonight (I have a dev
account).

I have the same problem. I installed Prey on both my Ipad 2 and Iphone 4 and both don't report anything ... well Iphone after day and a half just suddenly woken up and started sending me emails that my phone was found... however in control panel only location is shown on the map and nothing else (no pictures etc). Ipad 2 on the other hand hasn't reported anything and it's connected to WIFI all the time (just like iPhone).

Something is not working correctly..

Guys, we're about to release a post explaining in details how Prey works in iOS. In the meantime, some important points:

- Prey uses the  "Significant-Change Location Service" (From Apple: In iOS 4.0 and later, you can use the significant-change location service to receive location events. This service offers a significant power savings and provides accuracy that is good enough for most applications. It uses the device’s cellular radio to determine the user’s location and report changes in that location, allowing the system to manage power usage much more aggressively than it could otherwise. This service is also capable of waking up an application that is currently suspended or not running in order to deliver new location data) as the trigger to check its missing status on the Control Panel. So, if your phone doesn't move enough, Prey won't have any chance to "wake up".

- When Prey changes its status to missing, it also activates the "normal" location service, which is much more accurate and of course consumes more battery than the other one. This listener is only turned on when the phone is marked as missing. Be careful though, because it's not enough to just mark the phone as not missing in the Control Panel to swap the location listeners again, but it's also needed that the phone updates its missing status accordingly the Control Panel's one. This could take a maximun time of the interval value set on the Control Panel, that is when Prey checks its status again, and send a new report in case it keeps as missing.

- Unfortunately, the purple arrow is impossible to hide. However, if the phone isn't mark as missing, your battery shouldn't suffer more than normal.

- This is a "just released" version, so of course it could have bugs (ask Gmail if you don't believe me, hehe), so we'll be more than glad to receive your feedback, and to fix any importante issue ASAP. Battery issues are considered more than important, by the way ;)

Hope this information could help.

Best,
Carlos
Prey team

Are you all getting …
Last seen: xx minutes ago
…changes in the device sidebar in the control panel?

It would at least indicate that the device is associated with the correct account & is connecting to the control panel.
I have had my 3GS/ iOS 5 set to missing for a while & I only have 3 reports. It basically supports everything Carlos said, reports will be sent when a location change kicks Prey into action.

The first 3 reports I could see that the location was becoming more accurate, then they stopped when the GPS fix was accurate.

One issue I do have is that I never seem to get network info in the reports. It's unclear if it is being collected and just not shown in the control panel or if it is not sent to the CP.

iOS 5.01 is out with some fixes for battery drain issues.
Have you found it is still draining even with missing mode disabled?
Have you seen any reports yet?

Hello

The location services are always on although the phone is not marked as missing anymore

Read how it works on iOS…
http://preyproject.com/blog/2011/11/prey-for-iphone-and-ipad-how-it-works

I believe this is a limitation of Apple's programming API's that restrict background processes.

The Prey team can't do what you are asking for (though you don't make it clear what you want), Apple don't allow apps on their store to activate & run code without user interaction. If the Prey team did what you are asking it wouldn't be able to function.

Have you actually tested how much battery life is used by Prey? Use it for a week recording the charge level at the end of the day, then repeat without it installed. I find it is negligible, uninstall it & let us know if you battery life suddenly improves, I'm assuming that is the issue here?

Prey isn't always actively using GPS, location services also use wifi to assist, and when not missing it doesn't poll for an accurate location.
If you ever use maps or other location apps they will drain more battery because they request a finer resolution & use GPS which can take 12 minutes to get an accurate lock.

I must say that I have Prey installed on my 4S, with the location service arrow always turned on, and the extra use of my battery is almost nothing. Battery life is the same as without Prey on it.

This is because Prey uses the Significant-change location service as the trigger to check the device's status against the Control Panel.
