Dear Friends,
This afternoon the Kansas Senate passed the Conference Committee Report on HB 2249 (includes HB 2118 - repealing the environs review). The debate opened with Senator Greg Smith (R - Overland Park) making a motion to reject the CCR and send it back to conference committee. Following a lengthy debate Senator Dennis Pyle (R-Hiawatha), chair of the Senate Local Government Committee, made a substitute motion to pass the CCR. Senator Pyle's motion passed on final action 29-10.
Tomorrow, the CCR on HB 2249 goes to the House of Representatives for a vote. HB 2118 already passed the House on 2-27 (99 - 24). Despite the previous vote it's important to to let you representative know your position on the CCR.
Also today, the Tax Conference Committee held it's first meeting since the veto session began (a week ago). The House offered what they call a "middle ground" tax package; proposing to retain half of the .6% sales tax which expires on June 30. The House also proposed significant reductions to Kansas standard deductions and itemized deductions. House and Senate Republicans will caucus in the morning to learn more about the tax proposal and budget issues. Democrats are invited too.
Legislative leadership is pushing to finish the Veto Session by Friday. Realistically, it's looking like the weekend. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Terry
