The Kansas Historical Society,
Doniphan County, and the Highland Historical Society are
announcing an exciting opportunity for those interested in
gaining hands-on experience repairing wooden windows and
building wooden storm windows. Craftsman
and educator, Bob Yapp, will lead two hands-on learning
workshops in Highland, KS this June. Homeowners, small
contractors, and owners of historic buildings will all benefit
from these training events.

Window Restoration Boot
Camp

June 16-18
This is a three-day, hands-on workshop demonstrating
repair techniques for historic wooden windows. This is an
intense, learn-by-doing opportunity. Students will learn sash
removal, safe paint & glass removal, epoxy wood repair,
glazing putty application, weather stripping, and sash
installation including re-roping sash cord. At the end of the
three days students will know how to completely restore a
double-hung window. The class will utilize a local property in
Highland, KS as an on-site laboratory. Registration is limited to
18 participants.
Building Storm Windows

June 20-22
Bob Yapp will continue his hands-on workshop with a
three-day tutorial on building wooden storm windows. Students
will learn why wood storms are important, how to measure an
opening for a storm, how to grade and pick lumber, storm sash
construction, glass/screen installation, as well as
weather-stripping and storm window installation techniques.
Students will learn how to completely build wooden storm
windows. The class will utilize the St. Martha’s AME Church in
Highland, KS and will construct storm windows specifically for
that building. Registration
is limited to 18 participants.
Workshops are sponsored by
the Highland Historical Society and Doniphan County. They are
partially funded by an Historic Preservation Fund grant from
the National Park Service through the Kansas Historical
Society.
