EMERGINGS
A newsletter expressing the life of Prescott Memorial Baptist Church
December 4, 2009
Note: This is the first official on-line edition of Emergings. We plan to experiment with different on-line formats in the future, but for now we wanted to get the Advent/Christmas schedule in your hands (actually, in your screens!) as soon as possible.
We are currently unable to transfer the grid calendar via email, but hard copies of the calendar are available on tables outside the sanctuary, and December events are listed here and on the attached document, which (despite its heading "Sermon Schedule") includes materials that normally appear on the back side of the main page of Emergings.
If you wish to respond to this email, please do not hit Reply, as that will go to the entire distribution list. Instead, forward or create a separate email to twalsh@fordharrison.
Thank you.
Tom Walsh
Emergings editor
ADVENT: A TIME OF PREPARATION
We are now in the season of Advent, a period of waiting and preparation for the advent (arrival) of our Lord on earth, as the baby Jesus. Each Sunday we choose a theme, light Advent candles, and collect special offerings. We’ll have special programs for worship on Dec. 13 (children and youth Christmas drama) and Dec. 20 (special choir music). Celebrate with us!
BEFORE AND AFTER ADVENT WORSHIP SERVICES
During Advent we receive $3 Angel Tree donations in honor or memory of persons. The donations benefit students at Joyce Wood’s school (Fairley HS) and at Prescott’s Adopt-A-School, Sherwood Elementary; and the Youth Center in Thailand that Meredith Walsh helped found.
During all four Sundays of Advent, as a fundraiser the youth will sell $1.50 sausage biscuits at 9:30 a.m. in Fellowship Hall, as Sunday School begins. Also, on each Sunday of Advent we’ll gather in Fellowship Hall after worship for fellowship and refreshments.
IAM STORE: OPEN EXTRA HOURS
Our International Artisans Market (IAM Store) offers a wealth of Christmas items. Through Christmas, IAM is open 11-2 on Saturdays, 12-1:30 Sundays, and 5-6 Wednesdays.
SATURDAY SUPPER
It will next be our turn to do Saturday Supper on Dec. 19, the Saturday before Christmas. As we did at Thanksgiving, once again we’ll serve our guests at tables, and in addition we’ll have Christmas presents to hand out. We especially need donations of mittens, hats, scarves, for all ages. If you’d like to donate money for this, you can do it through the church as a designated offering or give money to Ruth Holland, who can buy such items wholesale.
THIS COMING SATURDAY, DEC. 5
5:00 p.m. Children ages 3 through 12 will meet in the church parking lot and drive to Starry Nights. The church will pay for the children. Please call Ruth Holland (767-5899 or 605-0426) if you can help with transportation.
SUNDAY, DEC. 6: SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT (PEACE)
10:45 a.m. Morning worship. Scripture texts: Malachi 3:1-4 and Luke 3:1-6.
4:00 p.m. The choir will rehearse an hour earlier than usual, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.
WEDNESDAYS, DEC. 9 and 16
After dinner at 6:00, our pastor will lead a discussion of the book Who Moved My Church?
SATURDAY, DEC. 12
9:45 a.m. Worship Committee meets
11:00 a.m. Church Council meets
10:45-11:50 a.m. Pick up Angel Food orders
6:00 p.m. Students in Grades 6-12 will come to the church for Game Night, featuring food, fun, and games. Youth, arrange to be picked up no later than 8:30 p.m. Adults, let the church office know if you can help. NOTE: Youth must participate in some fundraising/service opportunities to be eligible for “Just for Fun” events.
SUNDAY, DEC. 13: THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT (JOY)
10:45 a.m. In lieu of the sermon, the children and youth will present an original Christmas play in worship. We’ll sing two verses of several favorite Christmas carols.
5:00 p.m. Choir practice
6:30 p.m. We’ll have a special congregational meeting to discuss the budget. It’s important. All members are urged to attend. We’ll have light refreshments.
SATURDAY, DEC. 19
9:30 a.m. Special choir practice – Final rehearsal before Christmas performance.
3:00 p.m. Saturday Supper at St. Lukes, a special Christmas feast with gifts. Once again, we’ll work jointly with our sisters and brothers from Beulah. The youth who are helping serve need to be dropped off at 4:00 and picked up at 5:15.
SUNDAY, DEC. 20: FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT (LOVE)
10:45 a.m. The choir will present a Christmas cantata in worship. This is also Harvest Sunday, when we’ll receive stewardship pledges. Scripture texts: Micah 5 and Luke 1:39-55. After worship the youth will have a Bake Sale fundraiser. Please bring at least one item that can be sold to benefit our youth.
