A friend of mine mentioned that the iphone app isn't working properly,

Issues with XML validation

Ok seems I figured this out. Turns out you need to be authenticated to
get the direct download link! :)
The xml output now includes the url and direct_link fields to fetch
the file.

The xml output for a note has this...

I don't believe so Kashif. It might be something handy to add into the API.
Could allow app developers to add "find friends by email" functionality into
their programs.
