Hi Greg! I am a member of the Duct Tape and Zip Ties Racing Team ... our first race last year was at the Kansas City Maker Faire. We were members of Make KC and not a hacker space. However, I got to know the guys racing against us from CCCKC ... and that following Thursday night I went to their weekly meeting. Our family joined the hacker space right away ... I felt right at home there. When we went to Detroit, we went as members of both Make KC and CCCKC. We raced against one team that competes in FIRST Robotics (which we do as well).
CCCKC has definitely been a positive experience for our family and we are learning so much there! At the moment I am taking an Arduino class, just finished a silk screening class, and participated in a group buy to order parts for a 3D printer which we will build together! My husband is in the process of building a cnc machine ... all of this would not have happened without our involvement in our local hacker space! ...and I haven't told you about all the wonderful things my teenagers have been doing at the space! Take an evening and check out the local hacker space ... I am sure you will thank me for it later. :-)
To answer your question ... no you don't have to belong ... but ... :-)

Proud member of a hacker space!
