I am looking for some assistance in joining this year. I do not
belong to a formal hackerspace, but I would like to assemble a rag-tag
team of misfits to compete. We hail from suburban Chicago. Are there
still spots available for the races? I saw that the KC race is
filling up.
Someone please get in contact with me so I can know the process for
getting fully involved with this.

Thanks for your response! I am really excited about the possibility
of racing with you all.
I am still very very unclear as to whether or not I HAVE to be a part
of a hackerspace. Or can privatized teams still join? All I need is
the go-ahead and I will sign up. Oh, and I guess I would like to know
whether or not there will be enough spots to race in Detroit and
Chicago.
Thank you!

Though we would really love for you to check out one of your local hackerspaces (Workshop 88 in Naperville or Pumping Station: One on North Side of Chicago) it is not required to join in on the fun. If you would like help getting started or would like to talk to one of the many fine experienced teams about any questions regarding build out, feel free to reach out to them here.
Entries are wide open for all events. Feel free to sign up! Maker Faire Kansas City is currently accepting team entries.

Hi Greg! I am a member of the Duct Tape and Zip Ties Racing Team ... our first race last year was at the Kansas City Maker Faire. We were members of Make KC and not a hacker space. However, I got to know the guys racing against us from CCCKC ... and that following Thursday night I went to their weekly meeting. Our family joined the hacker space right away ... I felt right at home there. When we went to Detroit, we went as members of both Make KC and CCCKC. We raced against one team that competes in FIRST Robotics (which we do as well).
CCCKC has definitely been a positive experience for our family and we are learning so much there! At the moment I am taking an Arduino class, just finished a silk screening class, and participated in a group buy to order parts for a 3D printer which we will build together! My husband is in the process of building a cnc machine ... all of this would not have happened without our involvement in our local hacker space! ...and I haven't told you about all the wonderful things my teenagers have been doing at the space! Take an evening and check out the local hacker space ... I am sure you will thank me for it later. :-)
To answer your question ... no you don't have to belong ... but ... :-)
I will be signing up this week. Then, I will probably be asking
questions about building and such.
I am definitely interested in going to a hackerspace, but the cost
always seems very high for the amount of time I would work there. I
will be moving out to Boulder, CO within the year, and I hope to see
what they're up to there.
Thanks again!
