Hello All,

I see we have a number of old POS terminals in our hack stock?

So idea that came to mind is to use them as PC’s and build them in under the benches with KB/Mouse also under bench on small shelf so can be pulled out and put on top and then have screen fixed to walls.

Then each bench has its own PC/WS or two.

What you think? Ian

My concern would be with power, or lack of. With PCs you very quickly run out of sockets.

We had discussed putting a network of spare computers in, what I've dubbed the "social" room, the former office between what is now the workshop and the toilets.

Hopefully that'll become clearer on Sunday and we can organise it accordingly.

Possible use 1 for door entry. Would need magnetic swipe card reader. Overkill at the mo but easily expandable once we get internet

Yea, something like that would allow maybe a tweet to show who is in the building. or at least show that the building is open.

Does anyone have an old wireless router that will run openwrt? I was thinking that would make a good set of brains for an access system.
Everyone would need either a smart(ish) 'phone or a

laptop to access the system - individual authentication etc.
It would interface - depending on the model of router, either more or less easily- with the physical locking system.
My initial thoughts are rack and pinion bars, (old car steering system or some creative woodwork - i've been looking at woodgears!) driven by motors, with microswitch limit/status switches etc - hooked up to a microcontroller that talks to the router.
Some routers have i/o pins inside their cases... as well as uart /i2c/ etc.

Top it all off with an internal manual control - a bank safe style wheel...

Whatdaya reckon?

Funny you should mention mag strip readers... I shall bring one of the POS keyboard/mag strip readers down so people can have a look (they are at the back of the loft at the moment but I'm sure I can grab one).

Though I would advise against a POS for access entry for the simple fact it would have to be on a lot/all the time and uses way more power than something like the pi/arduino/custom board. Also I really don't like the idea of tweeting to the world when no one is about at our workshop full of tools.

Anything that requires a smartphone to access is no go for me.

Oh and internal manual control is a must, quick, easy and reliable exit in case of emergency.

I was thinking like an auxiliary opening much, on top of the usual key system

If we have a mag strip reader writer, we could each have a swipe card. Reprogram an old gift card to allow entry.
