Hi,
I'm wondering, what exactly is the reason behind the rule that a
licensee name has to have at least 8 characters?

The 8 character limit is there to make it harder to reverse engineer
the license key generator and to also minimize the chances of
different people getting the same license key. It might not be
necessary if you don't embed the licensee name in the license key, use
sufficiently large license keys, or a file based licensing system.
