surname SWIST

Has anyone else come across the surname SWIST in their Portuguese genealogy?

 

Years ago, I was researching a Portuguese family that used the name COLEMAN in 1870-1900 Providence, RI. A death record gave the maiden name of a woman from Flores as SWIST.

 

At the time, I thought someone had made a mistake or misunderstood. However, a recent contact in Fall River has me convinced that SWIST is not a fluke.

 

Anyone?

Interesting, but I have never seen the name. Maybe it's an
americanized version of some portuguese name?

Actually I think SWIST is the original ... probably Polish surname origin & probably not in the Azores for more than a generation or two. Families in MA & RI now.

I dont think that surname being from portuguese roots,

Probably it was writen the way they pronouced it.

Yet, I  cant think of a name with that sound
