Hi everyone!
We here at the Portland Zine Symposium are busy getting all the details finalized for the 12th annual zine symposium! But we wanted to take a minute to remind everyone in Portland of a few upcoming events happening this week. Please come out and support us - both the events are fundraisers, and we'd love to see you there.
Please join us on Thursday July 19 for an art opening and reading at the Waypost at 3120 N. Williams from 7-10 p.m.! Come check out a bunch of rad art donated from local artists - you might find something you want to take home with you! All the proceeds from the art show will go to benefit PZS. In addition to the art show, listen to readings by Martha Grover, A.M. O'Malley, Aron Steinke, Jonathan Hill, Marco Megacron, and Christina Blue Crow.
And on Saturday July 21 through Sunday July 22, we are hosting our
4th annual 24-hour zine challenge in conjunction with the Independent Publishing Resource Center! Finish one more zine for your PZS table, make some friends over the dizzying madness of staying up too late, and help support PZS! To meet the challenge, participants must make a 24-page zine from an original, on-the-spot conception through the final product in 24 hours. The event will be held at the IPRC (1001 SE Division), and we will provide supplies (paper, glue, scissors, etc.) as well as some snacks (coffee, tea, pizza, doughnuts, and sodas!) It's $5 to register, and we ask that participants help make this a successful fundraiser for PZS by asking friends and family to sponsor them marathon-style. Those who pledge to sponsor a participant only pay if the person finishes the challenge. Sponsors who pledge $10 or more will also receive a copy of the zine produced by their sponsored challenger! Sign up to participate or to sponsor a zinester by emailing
pdxz...@gmail.com Please go to
our website for all of the nitty-gritty details.
We've got a couple of other awesome events coming up before the symposium (which is happening on August 11 and 12, mark your calendars!) so please stay tuned.
Also, if you'd like to help us out before and during the event, we are looking volunteers! We need help picking up donations, staffing the info table at the event, setting up and breaking down during the event, hanging signs and directing people at the event, and many many other jobs. Please email us (
pdxz...@gmail.com) if you would like to be put on the volunteer list for this year. We honestly can't do it without you, so if you love the symposium, please consider helping us out.
And lastly, we're still looking for people to host workshops! Do you have a skill to share?
Fill out a workshop form if you are interested. If you have an idea for a workshop (like a panel or discussion) but aren't sure how to coordinate it, get in touch, and we can try to help.
Thanks,
-the 2012 PZS organizers
