Greetings!
This
is the May/June newsletter for the Portland Zine Symposium. In this
newsletter you will find: How you can help us, our ongoing events, when
to submit a workshop proposal, AND when table registration will open.
First,
thank you all so much for your endless patience. We have stumbled
through several road blocks this year. The largest being our extensive
search all over Portland for a new location that fit our needs and our
budget. This was an extremely tedious and time consuming task that
pushed everything else back. BUT! We have just made our down payment on
the new and awesome location are looking forward to the 11th Annual
Portland Zine Symposium to be held at The Refuge (116 SE Yamhill St).
DATES If you haven’t heard yet, we finally have dates for the 11th annual Portland Zine Symposium! The dates are August 6th & 7th, 2011
DONATIONS OF ANY KIND ARE ALWAYS APPRECIATED The
move to our new location, while awesome, is a lot more costly and we
could use any help that you can offer. Here are are several ways you can
help us complete our goal of making this the best Portland Zine
Symposium ever:
CHIPIN In
order to cover our expanding costs we have set up our own fund raiser
through chipin.com. We are hoping to raise an additional $1,500 to cover
our expenses and to help create a little bit of padding when we lead
into next year’s event. Please considering helping us out financially if
you can or placing the chipin widget on your website. ChipIn, unlike
Kickstarter, allows you to donate through PayPal. So, if you have a
little cash from selling your zines and are feeling generous, we would
love it if you could toss a donation our way. Links to our chip in page here.
POSTCARD PROJECT Our
theme this year is “postmarked.” What better way to celebrate that than
with mail? We are offering a pre-addressed and pre-stamped blank post
card for you to decorate for $5 in the USA $7 rest of the world
(International postcards come with an International Reply Coupon).
Once
you have colored, drawn, collaged, typed on or otherwise decorated the
post card, drop it in the mail to us. All postcards we receive will be
on display in a gallery at the 2011 Portland Zine Symposium. This is an
inexpensive, fun, and easy way to support the Symposium even if you
can’t be there. Get one for yourself! Buy some for friends! Mention them
in your zine or on your blog! http://pdxzines.bigcartel.com/ (Postcards are also available from the Etsy shop of PZS organzier, Alex and should soon be available at the IPRC in Portland)
DONATING GOODS Are
you a business that would like to make a tax deductible donation of a
gift certificate, food or beverages for our events? We will provide
links to your business on our website and in our program at our event.
Please get in touch for more information. pdxz...@gmail.com
WORD GAME WEDNESDAYS AT THE WAYPOST The
Portland Zine Symposium hosts a game night at the Waypost (3120 North
Williams Ave.) on the 2nd Wednesday of every month leading up to the
11th Annual Portland Zine Symposium. We will have fun word games like
Banangrams, Scrabble, Apples to Apples and more! Drop in on a bike ride
up Williams, have a snack or a drink, trade your zine and let you
glorious wordiness shine! The event is free, but there is a fee of $1
per game entrance, as we are trying to fundraise. The next dates of Word
Game Wednesday are June 8 & July 13 6pm-10pm
TABLE REGISTRATION & WORKSHOP PROPOSALS Our
location search held up a lot of things including the changes that
needed to be to be made to our website and we are sincerely sorry for
that. The new website with the chosen artwork from our annual call by Breena Wiederhoeft and Zech Bard
is scheduled to go live by June 1st! This means that table registration
and workshop proposals will be open on June 1st, 2011 as well!
Our
location is a bit smaller this year and tables are limited so register
early. Due to our costs, table prices will be going up this year. A half
table for 2 days will be $20 and a full table for 2 days will be $50.
We are offering a few other items including pre-ordered shirts and our
10th annual zine from last year. Please consider adding them to your
registration. As in year past, full tables are limited only to distros,
libraries and stores and are subject to review before approval. If you
would like to share a table with a friend, please list that in the order
notes for a half table. Registration for a full table that meets our
51% zines and published titles policy automatically secures a half table
whether a full table is granted or not.
RIDESHARES TO PORTLAND AND WHERE TO STAY Looking for a ride to the Portland Zine Symposium? Have you checked out our forums for either: http://pdxzines.com/forums/
Again,
thanks so much for hanging in there with us in our transition to a new
location. Changes can be exciting and sometimes a bit scary but we thing
this is the best decision and we are looking forward to seeing you all
there! As always, keep up to day with us on our webpage, follow us on Twitter, or like us on Facebook.
