About Portfolio
Who are we?
The Portfolio Singers are an informal group of mixed voice amateur singers from the Cambridge area. Most of us are either post-graduate students at the University, or city residents. There are usually between 6-12 members at any one meeting. (If the thing to the right says 0 members, it's fibbing - we're a couple of dozen.)
When and where?
We meet on Tuesday evenings throughout the year, generally at 100 Gwydir Street, Cambridge. Click on the address to get a map.
On occasion we meet elsewhere, but changes of venue will be announced on the list in advance.
We gather from 8.15pm, aiming to start singing at 8.30. We break for port at 9pm, and then sing on until 10pm.
Repertoire
We sing a variety of music genres, including:
- Barbershop
- English Madrigals
- Church anthems
- Popular part-songs
Almost anything that can be sung 'a capella', in fact.
Performances
As a rule, we do not perform in public, and sing merely for our own enjoyment. However, we do occasionally sing at weddings, banquets and other such occasions, and every year we sing Christmas Carols in Cambridge to raise money for charity.
How to join
If you would like to join:
- Apply for group membership. (It'll ask you to sign in to Google; you'll need to 'Create an account now' with your email address if you haven't already; it DOESN'T have to be a Gmail address.)
- Once your membership has been approved, send the group an e-mail message introducing yourself - your name and what sort of range you sing, whether you like port and Cadbury's chocolate fingers, and whether you're allergic to cats.
- Note to spammers: emails from new members are moderated.
There are no auditions to join the Portfolio Singers, but a reasonable standard of sight-reading is helpful.
There are no membership fees, although occasional contributions towards the purchase of more port or music may be asked for.
