RACE AND HEALTH DISCUSSED AT P.O.P. MEETING
OnThursday, July 19th, the People’s Organization of Progress will host an important discussion on Race and Health at their weekly general assembly meeting.
P.O.P.’s weekly general assembly meeting takes place at Abyssinian Baptist Church, 224 West Kinney Street, Newark, every Thursday at 7pm. The lecture will begin at7:30pm.
The special guest speaker will be Professor Naa Oyo Kwate who has just completed a critically acclaimed study called the Black LIFE Study, LIFE serving as an acronym for Linking Inequality Feelings and Environment. The study was based on an evaluation of race and health conditions facing African-Americans in New York City. Dr. Kwate hopes its approach and results will help improve how the question of race and its negative impact on the health of African-Americans is appraised and assessed in other cities as well.
Kwate is a trained psychologist. She is currently an associate professor in the Human Ecology and Africana Studies Departments at Rutgers University. She is also a recipient of the National Institute’s of Health Director’s New Innovator Award.
“With health care accessibility now being such a contentious issue on the national stage, perhaps works like Dr. Kwate’s will help move that discussion in the right direction,” said P.O.P. chairman Lawrence Hamm.
