I get really confused on Fridays because I go to church and as far as I am concerned it’s the Lord’s day for me in this particular point in my life. Then I get a phone call from my No.1 Lady (not that there’s a number 2 or any other number.) Anyway I get a call from the UK and of course it’s a regular working day and kids are going to school and people going to work. What makes it even more confusing is on Sunday I go to work (Pastor B please don’t read this), yeah Sunday is just a regular day out here so I go to work and when I call the UK of course everyone is in church. I’ll get used to it.
One thing I’ve noticed about a number of churches I’ve attended is that parking is a problem. It seems to be universal, whether in Nigeria, Mauritius, UK, UAE, Sweden, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Norway, Argentina, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Israel or where ever. I’ve also noticed that when a church is big in terms of numbers, the quality of the fellowship is not always what it ought to be, cliques form and people can easily just drift, in and out.
So what makes a church good? Like my dad would say, what are the outward visible signs of the inner spiritual grace? Having problems parking could be one of the indicators that a church is good. Good in the numerical sense. Good at marketing, good at selling, good at evangelism. Ok I can hear some screams when I use the words marketing and selling in relation to church. Sorry guys I’m not talking about making money. All I am saying is that we are all involved in the M and S words whether we like to use them or not. Or maybe promotion is a better word. What ever word you choose to use the fact is people are drawn or attracted to something and the process of drawing people (marketing or whatever you want to call it) is as important for a church as it is for individuals and organisations. Feel free to write in and complain or present a different point of view, as I recognise this could be controversial.
What makes a church attractive, what makes people come to one church and not another. There are many factors, but one thing I’ve been discovering in the last few years is the beauty of holiness. Holiness is incredibly attractive, it is breathtakingly beautiful. It is attractive not just to God but also to man. Actually it is very attractive to man, that’s why a lot of brothers come to church to find a wife. Sorry guys I’ll try and be serious.
So what makes a church good and attractive? Another word that comes to mind is commitment, the quality of the commitment of the members; that is you! How committed are you to meeting together, to breaking bread, to study the Word, to prayer, to works of practical and spiritual service? Where is the commitment?
You may notice I’ve not mentioned the traditional blurb about bible teaching and preaching from the pulpit. Well that is deliberate. The church is more than a pastor or the pastor. The church is a body, it is made up of you and you and you. It is the quality of your life, the quality of your thought life, the quality of your actions, the quality of your prayer life, the quality of your devotion and the quality of your commitment. It is you that makes the church good or not. Ok it is also the quality of me, and you.
Blessings. Holla back.
