I have heard if individuals experience GERD some have found relief from probiotics. Probotics generally contain dairy. Dairy is to be avoided with PLD whereas prebiotics are certain vegetables.

I am a whole foods type of person, rarely supplementing but eating foods that I find are beneficial and tasty.

Warmly,
Diane

I find them useful if you have diarrhoea after antibiotics only. That is the only time they are useful. Do not take whilst taking antibiotics otherwise the antis will kill them.

If you are on dialysis you need to also speak to your dietician. Being milk based you may need to limit your dairy.

Hello Everyone: thank you for the response. I was thinking about probiotics because every time I eat (really healthy) I get full really fast and sometimes I get indigestion, bloated. I try to drink ginger tea after my meals and some one recommended probiotics. I know that we with PLD must be very caution about what we eat and the remedies sometimes people gives us.

In this case I will avoid them, I read the ingredients and in did they have lactose. I 've been taking milk thistle and I feel some kind of relief.

Thank you for all your help!

Bloating after a meal is a real symptom from PLD.  As our livers enlarge this can become early satiety with emaciation or we can get really skinny.

I find I feel much better if I have raw fruits for breakfast, a big salad for lunch (with olive oil dressing homemade) and dinner is usually roasted vegetables. I bake and grind my own bread to minimize bloating. I also find if I eat home baked non yeasted bread this does not cause either myself or my husband to gain weight. However if I use dairy with eggs, this gives me bloating and can cause a weight gain especially if I use maple syrup, agave, or sugars. If I use almond milk and no eggs = no bloating.

Paola you could make your own corn tortillas. i love corn tortillas fresh and home made.  What seems to increase bloating?

I cannot eat a truckload of vegetables that would bring me over to bloating, however if I eat out or I eat commercial bread or I eat yeast this causes bloating for me. There is another thing I have discovered. If I eat out, the salt on the food is not Himalayan I get a slight rise in blood pressure.

Roasted vegetables are really nice. They also free one up to do other things. I put corn in the oven, along with Okinawan sweet potatoes, kabocha squash and chiogga beets and let 'em roast for at least 2 hours.  Then I off and can do something else. If I am still hungry after dinner I will make a cup of chamomile tea or hibiscus tea. Artichokes are another that is really nice after roasting.

Do they help? Do they contain dairy? lactose?

The vegetables are called PRE-biotics. These are different than PRObiotics. I find PREbiotics useful as I must avoid dairy.

If you have PLD, all yeast is not the same. Some yeasted bake goods increase increase symptoms, especially commercially available yeast, whereas non-yeasted spelt bread does not increase PLD symptoms.

It is also true that when adding wine to a dish, 15 minutes is required to burn off the alcohol and one is left with the flavor.  I experience an increase of PLD symptoms if I eat anything cooked with wine. I cannot drink non-alcoholic wine.  I do enjoy Navarro Vineyard gevertztraimer white or golden grape juice!

No milk is required to produce lactic acid.  Consuming milk, dairy, whey really increases my symptoms, but then again I am very compulsive about keeping my PLD symptoms minimized.

Don't you have to have milk or a milk product to have lactic acid? I thought you couldn't have milk products.

Oh my bread rises beautifully. I love watching it bake. Sometimes I even pull up a chair and just watch the bread bake.  I take flour + water and mix it together adding fresh water, flour each day for and I continue the process for about 4-5 days. This process is said to capture wild yeast from the air.

Here is how to make a chef to replace yeast:

But the important thing is it makes a lactic acid ferment as opposed to an alcohol ferment. Lactic acid can easily be blown off by taking a deep breath through the lungs whereas commercial yeasted baked goods creates an alcohol ferment in  baking. This alcohol ferment (for me)  increases bloating and weight gain severely.

If one happens to live in Europe, there is a lactic acid ferment commercially available from the Rudolph Steiner folks their brand of bio-dynamic products.

I really enjoy cooking and baking and roasting. I also enjoy raw foods and vegetables. I like decorating food and I enjoy eating tasty food.

A recipe for spelt bread is here:
This is a picture of my bread.

One of my favorites to bake in the morning is breakfast bread called Baps:
I usually prepare the dough and leave it in the fridge overnight then in the morning I take it out early. Baking takes 10 or 15 minutes, but my breads really put on a show for me and the taste, the taste of warm bread is so yummy.

One Thanksgiving festival we decided to go vegan.

Here is a bit more on Rudolph Steiner on baking bread. Also on this page is a short discussion on making your own water kefir, Non-dairy probiotics.

“Honey and salt stand at opposite poles . . .and create a dynamic field. Salt and honey take their place and the bread rises under the influences of tension between them. The bread rose steadily around 6 am, whereas yeast bread rose at midnight.”

I also freshly grind my flour from grains.

Here is a website that talks about lactic ferments:

Rudolph Steiner was a lecturer, a philosopher. He was not a scientist.
The basic bio-dynamic philosophy is beyond organic. It takes into account  the entire world as a huge eco system with the earth, the water, minerals, the sun, the moon, and the stars all taking part.  It is felt that one area cannot be affected without having an impact on another part.

There was a woman named Maria Thun. She took all that Rudolph Steiner had said to heart and experimented with growing things; with drinking wine; etc. She detailed her experiments and had a huge farm in Germany. She had published several books with photographs of many many things; some picked at their peak following Rudolph Steiner's techniques. while other things she did the opposite of his teachings.

By far and away following his philosophy has lead to a growing of much better crops, much tastier crops with less attacks from bugs and pests.

There was a wine vineyard in Northern California. This vintner, the wine maker had won the award back in 1976 for a blind wine tasting against the major wines of France. They made a movie about this called Bottle Shock. I read the book. This same experiment was repeated 20 years later in 1996 and lo and behold the Americans once again won against the French in a blind taste testing for wine.

Inspired by this movie we took a trip to visit this vintner. He now owns  Grgich-Hills. Vineyards.  He is also old now. Some years ago phylloxera (a root louse) attacked his grape vines. All the neighborhood vineyards begged him to kill his grapes. They feared that this would spread to other vineyards, to their vineyards. They said the only possibility was to burn the entire crop. His daughter Violet asked him to consider bio-dynamic methods. He allowed his son-in-law and his daughter to present to him about bio-dynamic farming methods. The result was he decided to give it a try. They grew certain herbs, then burned the herbs and spread the ash over the grapes. The result was not only was phylloxera not a problem, but his wine that year was the sweetest most wonderful he had ever created.

Mike Grgich now owns the largest bio-dynamic farm in all of North America. He sings and plays music to the grape vines.

When I got into baking bread I could not figure out why some days my bread rose so beautifully and tasted wonderfully. Other days it was flat. Then my dear friend in Germany reminded me about Maria Thun. Now the two of us try to bake bread on flower or fruit days. On these days my bread rises beautifully.

Here is the Demeter association of North America

Yes on occasion I too get dry skin, really dry skin.  What I do:
Stop soap.
Make my own soap a mixture of
bentonite clay
tsp of honey
olive oil
If I am really dry I use this olive oil soap (careful it can make the shower floor slippery)
Followed by baking soda to help bind the oil
Then apply more olive oil to skin
Then dry

I just read that olive oil contains something that is anti-aging.

I also drink cranberry juice 2 ounces with an ounce of mineral water. This seems to make my skin really soft.
I also avoid the harsh sun rays upon my face. You constantly see Asians here with umbrellas hiding from the harsh sun.

Is it cold where you are?
Is it windy?
How is your billirubin?
How is your creatinine?
are you self testing your urinary pH?

More details are here:

Dejar Diane:

Where I live  the weather is very nice this spring, between 60-85 degrees, it's kind of windy but not everyday and I spend almost all day indoors.
My bilirubin is: 0.4 mg/dL.       the reference here says: up to 1.0
My creatinine is : 0.6 mg/dL    the reference here says: 0.5-1.1

Here you don't find  the pack for testing your urinary pH your self. You need to go to the lab and let them check it for you. We are going to Chicago on July and I will buy some there.

Today I started drinking the cranberry juice with mineral water and I didn't use soap today. I don't like using sunblock because I haven't found one that will not harm my liver, I usually put some coconut oil, it says that has 15 SPF. Do  you know a sunblock that can be safe for us? I wish there would be a Whole Foods store here.

I eat really healthy, basically the PLD diet by the book. My mornings start whit a green juice (everyday) during the day I eat fruits and vegetables, love  veggie soups. I also eat lentils, beans, black eye peas and quinoa. I eat daily corn tortillas, here in Mexico you can find the best ones made by hand, they are truly delicious! I drink water with lemon and chia also love  herb teas. I became vegan on March 2012 and I don't regret it for a second. I have a bread machine but haven't use it yet, I will try to make my first bread without yeast.

About making the bread with just flour and water, those 4-5 days that you wait to capture the yeast, do you put it sometime in the fridge? Or do you leave it outside? And then what is the procedure, I want to try it.

Thanks!

Paola you are in excellent health. Your dry skin is NOT from your kidneys or liver. I think you need to add olive oil rubs to your skin. Follow this with baking soda to wash off the oil and rinse and pat dry.

Hurray for eliminating soap.
Cranberry juice will make one slightly acidic. I take two ounces with an ounce of mineral water daily.

I use zinc cream. It is sold cheaply as a cream for baby bottoms. Your skin will be slightly pink, but I just rub this into my skin.
I am attempting to boycott WholeFoods as they have been bullied and agreed to sell Monsanto produce at their store.

Coconut oil can cause a bad sunburn.
Try zinc. See if it agrees with you.
Zinc is the main ingredient from an expensive sunblock my husband gets at Kokua Health Food Co-op here.

Dear Paola

I happen to have a bread machine post for making non-yeasted spelt bread.

Or Rye bread in a bread machine:

The starter recipe is here:

Usually I take flour + water  adding fresh daily until my starter resembles cottage cheese. Then I know it is ready.
I am a bit impatient so I do not put my starter in the fridge plus I really enjoy the taste of a sour bread, like a sourdough. If you want a sweeter bread, then put this is the fridge at night while you are sleeping. Remove it in the morning and mix it with fresh water + fresh flour. I would leave it out all day in the coolest spot of my home.

I have been told to have a really sweet bread, once the starter is ready make it into a chef. Allow it to develop. Then put it in the fridge at night, then the next day take it out of the fridge, allow 2 hours for it to come to room temperature and add a little more water and more flour once again allow it to ferment, then bake that evening with it or the next day.

The first time I made this bread mine was flat. I was disappointed but the taste was fabulous. And the crusty was really crusty. Nowadays, I replace the water with almond milk and it makes the crust softer.

Warmly,
Diane

Hi Diane

Yes the messages are coming through thanks.

I am fine, just so busy with my new job. It is big challenge but one I am getting to grips with. I am very organised and methodical which helps enormously. I am going to be starting Octreotide injections soon, I am going to stay over night in the Freeman Hospital Newcastle to have 3 injections on the first day, as long as this is tolerated with no reaction I will then be given the longer acting one. I just couldn't face, as well as it being impractical for me to inject myself 3/4 times daily for a month! With work etc. So we have negotiated going in to the hospital. I want to at least give this option a try, although I do not like the idea of injecting myself with drugs. I am also going to hope that the funding will be sought through my GP, but my liver specialist and Kidney consultant will put a case forward for me. I did however speak to the Professor to tell him that he really upset me 6 months ago at my last consultation back in October! he did apologise, he also sat me back down when I told him it was clear to me that he was obviously having a bad day at my last consultation. I told him it was unfortunately (unlike me) to also be having a bad emotional day. We discussed this, he again said he was not trying to upset me, however at the time it certainly did upset me, it was out of order him "Ranting" at me. he seemed shocked when I repeated in "parrot fashion" what he had said. I am glad it is now sorted out, because I have had not had a problem with him the before, quite the opposite. I think he is an excellent Surgeon. Communication at hospital consultations are very important to "get right" because when you have faith and an understanding person opposite you, no matter what disease you face, it certainly helps. Particularly as we know often "Gps" can often NOT assist you, you rely heavily on seeing the "Specialist" When you DON'T get this positive consultation, it cam have quite negative consequences. I try to steer away from negativity, it can make things feel a whole lot worse, something we all know and have either had personal experiences or have read on these stories on the site. I think sometimes you do need to have the courage to say " Hold on a minute I am a person with feelings!" so there you are that is my update Diane.

How are you? I hope you are keeping well. The weather is grey and miserable today here Diane, but to brighten things up I am having my Niece Emily to stay she is 9. We are off to the Pictures ( Cinema!) I AM showing my age there! To see the lovely film about a baby chimpanzee, pop corn here we come........

Love to you and yours, also to all members participating, or just lurking....I have been more of a "lurker" this year. But you are all still in my thoughts.

I hold out the hope that you are able to tolerate octreotide. I have been on it for five years and have seen shrinkage of my liver each year more and more. But I did have episodes related to octreotide. I get my monthly injections at the doctor's office.

I am very well. Thank you for asking. Today there is a Philipino Parade and festival at the beach. Our weather is beautiful, sunny, and balmy. How sweet you have a day with your Niece Emily. Enjoy this day.

If you have PKD as well as PLD you should ask your unit about your filters. Some filters harm your kidneys.
