A few weeks ago I saw a short clip from documentary " The Forgotten Ellis Island ". (hospital and immigrant admission policies). It was interesting and most exciting for me. One of the photos I believe was my grandfather. I bought the book and have tired to compare the photo in the book to the only 2 photos I have of my grandfather. I am 99% sure that it is him. I am now in the process of trying to get more information on the photo. The book was a good history of immigration and Ellis Island NY. For many of us this was the entry into the US of our families.

WE NEED YOU!!
As you know, PGSA operates solely with the help of volunteers and in order to grow and continually offer our membership something new, something different, we need to have new people with fresh ideas. You may be one of those individuals. I'm hoping you will at least consider contributing some of your time and expertise, whether you live locally or far away.
At the moment we are in need of the following:
Webmaster - Our Web site is a very valuable component of what PGSA has to offer in fulfilling its mission. So it is extremely important that we maintain continuity and fill this position as soon as possible. To maintain the Web site, it would be helpful if this individual had these skills: can write basic HTML, PHP code and SQL queries and, has worked with a Content Management System and PhpGedView. The current webmaster will provide training until Jan 1, 2010. If at all interest please contact webmas...@pgsa.org.
Publications Chair - Oversees any material that the Society issues, either in print or electronically, related to the genealogical purposes of the organization. At one time this individual single-handedly managed at least 3 responsibilities: assisted the Rodziny editor, looked for new books and CDs of merit to publish, and produced the e-zine Notebook. While this individual would still be overseeing all of these tasks, we now have someone who assists the Rodziny editor and hopefully we can find someone once again to produce the Notebook, therefore spreading the work load. Consequently, the major task of the Publications Chair would be to look for new materials of merit for the Society to publish.
Notebook Editor - This individual would be a part of the Publications committee, working to gather information of interest to genealogists and Polish-Americans, producing the monthly e-zine. They would also respond to e-mails sent to the Notebook address.
Volunteer Coordinator - Someone who would seek out individuals interested in working for PGSA in a volunteer capacity and match their skills and interests to an appropriate job/function as needed. The overall goal is to bring new, active participants into the Society.
Membership - Our Membership Chair would like a partner or co-chair to help with the duties of registering new members. It is definitely something that can be done from home and certainly of major importance to the functioning of the Society.
Web site Maintenance - It's not enough to put information on our Web site, we would like to have individuals to assist with maintaining the accuracy and the relevance of the information that has been posted, for example: keeping the list of translators current.
Projects - If you are good at research and verifying information, we have some pamphlets (20-30 pages), mapping and military, that desperately need upgrading. Much of the material is still useful but many of the resources quoted are outdated.
Graphics - From time to time we need some material designed or created giving it a professional touch and in keeping with a particular concept i.e., a brochure cover or an ad.
Most of these tasks can be done from the comfort of home, even in your pajamas. If at all interested, and I hope you are, please send your inquiry to PGSAmer...@pgsa.org, Attn: President. Also, if you have an idea of something PGSA might offer its members and you might also be interested in spearheading that activity, let us know.

Book on Polish Obituaries Has Been Reissued
The Polish Genealogical Society of America (PGSA) has reissued a seminal book on genealogical research. Called The Study of Obituaries as a Source for Genealogical Research by Tomas E. Golembiewski, the book gives examples of various kinds and formats of obituaries. Since set phrases are routinely used in an obituary, Golembiewski shows how even non-Polish speakers can garner important information from a death notice written in Polish.
The book also addresses such topics as women's names, societies and multiple insertions.
Obituaries are important tools in creating a family history. In the years that just one Polish newspaper was published in Chicago, Dziennik Chicagoski, the paper published over 125,000 obituaries, all indexed, by the way, by PGSA.
The book costs $10.00 plus shipping and handling. To order, go to the PGSA website: www.pgsa.org. A complete review of the Golembiewski book is available on the PGSA website.

Preserving State Records
Genealogy societies in both Pennsylvania and Michigan are working to preserve and/or make accessible records that are of particular value to genealogists. The government, in both states, may not be aware that current or proposed plans would make this information unavailable to many, both within and outside the state. Consequently, any and all interested parties are being asked to write letters to government officials, in support of the local societies.
For Pennsylvania, the website http://users.rcn.com/timarg/PaHR-Access.htm, has form letters that you can download and fill in, plus the names and addresses of government officials. The local organizations are working to make more records available on line.
For Michigan, the www.michigan.gov/gov is a link to contact the governor. Because of financial considerations, the extensive collection now housed in Lansing, MI is to be broken up and possibly transferred to other institutions. You can also contact Cynthia Grostick, President, Michigan Genealogical Council, http://mimgc.org/presid...@mimgc.org.
Keep in mind that while you may not reside in these states, you may have relatives that once did and still do!
