I thought this would be an interesting story to bring up here. Yahoo, arguably one of the largest podcast directories, is closing down their podcast directory and site effective Oct. 31. No specific reasons stated. The announcement is up at podcasts.yahoo.com.
Thought ya'll would like to know.

That's unfortunate, but given the complete lack of attention they've
given to maintaining it or addressing issues since it launched, it
isn't really much of a surprise.

So what about the directory are you going to miss. Is there a special
feature you will miss.

The chance for people to discover podcasts off of Yahoo!. Other than
that, I don't think they had anything special.

I'd like to say Yahoo's podcast portal will be missed, but the truth is, it
was missed by most people when it was active.

I just wonder about the impression this gives. Granted, we the
podcasters of the world know that podcasting is alive and well. And,
granted this will probably go unnoticed by people not interested in
podcasting. However, in the broader sense, what might this
indicate? Is Yahoo just bowing out of a crowded podcast directory
field or do they think podcasting is just a passing fad?

Considering the trouble they are having competing against Google, I would
guess they simply don't care and wanted to use those programmers and workers
elsewhere.
Anyone who thinks podcasting is a "passing fad" is going to be in for a very
rude awakening.

Few people used it. It had little impact on podcasting. I think it says more
about Yahoo (and by extension about iTunes' near-ownership of the term) than
it does about podcasting itself.

I think it's more along the lines of considering the medium to be real
enough that it no longer needs to be segregated. If I search for
something like 'beer brewing' on google, I find podcasts, websites,
pdfs, magazine, etc. People look for podcasts by subject. Google
doesn't feature DMOZ on the home page anymore because nobody is really
interested in a 'Web Site Directory' so podcasting directories are
bound to go the same way.

From just about the very beginning, Yahoo's podcast portal was
completely ignored and abandoned by Yahoo. Many here will remember
that there was really no way to claim your own show or feed, so you
were left to the mercy of whoever was looking at it--that week.
I spent several very frustrated months in, when? late 2005? early
2006? trying to get our listing right.
Currently my podcast is listed three times there, and it is about 30
episodes out of date. Since we produce our show once every three
weeks, and took about three months off this year, that's pretty
seriously behind the calendar.
I won't miss it a tiny little bit.

I am not surprised Yahoo has decided to do this. It jumped on a hot trend
and did not have a long-term vision. Yahoo just has to many businesses to
focus on and this one just did not work for them.
I just think that any podcast directory needs to be directly linked up with
an easy to subscribe to and use portable or mobile player to be successful.
Listeners and directories need to be one-click to subscribe and listen
processes. This explains the success of iTunes + iPod solution. Any other
successful platform needs to have the same equation and Yahoo just did not
have this connection to a portable or mobile phone player. I do think that
topic segmented web-based podcast directories can be successful, but will
need to eventually be merged with a simple one-button to subscribe and
listen platform for them to have long-term success. I think we will see a
few more directories close down or merge with other companies.
For podcasting to reach mass adoption they need to be easily subscribed to,
downloaded or streamed to a internet connected media
player(iPod,Zune,iRiver), car media player, TV set-top box, gaming console
and mobile phone. I saw with Mobilcast that given the option - people
choose 90% of the time to on-demand stream podcasts from an internet server
to mobile wireless connected phone player devices. We already see streaming
on TIVO with audio podcasts and most video (TIVOCasts) podcasts downloaded,
but audio will most often be streamed to player devices.
I am attending the Expo and will be arriving Thursday night.
