Learn how to: Help Haiti now!

Join Our Mailing List

Dear John,

Thank you for your interest in the work of El Fuego del Sol (FdS) in Haiti and the Dominican Republic

Come to the Global Activism Expo in Chicago, Saturday April 28 at the UIC Forum (corner of Roosevelt and Halsted) 12-6pm.

See the Fuego del Sol display all day, and join us to participate in our live presentation at 1pm!

Learn how you can help now from your hometown or by travel to the Dominican Republic and/or Haiti.

In Haiti, there are still thousands of people living in tattered tents or worse conditions. Sadly, the Dirt Cake factory has reopened. People scrape together some little money to buy dried dirt mixed with pig lard just to fill their stomachs and fight off the hunger. The food that is collected is cooked over dirty charcoal which destroys their lungs, shortens lives, and results in trees being stolen from the Dominican Republic (DR) to be smuggled as illegal charcoal back into Haiti. Haiti has destroyed their own trees, now trees in the DR are in decline.

The good news is that proven solutions are available. El Fuego del Sol offers a cooking system that combines Sun Oven cooking with efficient wood-stove cooking. With our system, participants can save 90% of the wood they are using now for cooking. The lungs of the cooks and the children they care for can be saved. Girls in the family can reduce their time gathering wood and have the chance to go to school. You could donate a Sun Oven today.

We are now working to introduce the first complete recycling program in Haiti. Learn how you can help!

Please help us to provide solutions to families so close to the US that human powered boats have successfully reached our shores.

HAITI Benefit/Awareness Raising Events
Mark Your Calendar Now for May 22, 2012 in Chicago. We have informative creative programming planned that will feature El Fuego del Sol and other key Haitian / Dominican developmental initiatives. The speakers list is now being established, so if you would like to present at these informative, community events, please contact FdS now. Please reserve the dates for this event and watch for details on www.elfuegodelsol.com and in upcoming newsletters.

There will be a silent auction of hand made art from Haiti and other items. Additional items for the silent auction would be greatly appreciated.

Plus, if you would like to host an event in your home or your town, please let us know:

Host a House Party!
Ready to make a major impact for a family that desperately needs your help? Then host a House Party where Kevin Adair or another El Fuego del Sol representative will come to your home and personally present for your concerned globally-minded gathering. The event will include video of our latest technology introductions in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. See the real people being helped by our work. Learn the inside story on the international response after the tragic earthquake. See the current conditions. Assist in bringing proven solutions to people in need. Haiti is so close to the US. It's time to work with the Haitian people for long-term sustainable solutions, not just hand-outs. Contact us today.

Eco Test Kitchen Now Open
Olga is cooking with the sun.

The FdS eco-stove introduction program broke new ground by introducing proven ecological cooking technology options to the women leaders in the Grupo Jaragua Community Center in the border region of the Dominican Republic and Haiti. In these traditional societies, it is the women who tend to cook and care for the children. From the multiple cooking technologies evaluated by the community leaders, the Global Sun Oven and the StoveTec ultra-efficient woodstove were selected as the best technology combination for cooking traditional foods for local families. Inspired by this process, FdS and Grupo Jaragua created the first Eco Test Kitchen in the Caribbean Region. All ecological technology manufacturers are welcome to submit their products for testing and demonstration in the real world conditions presented by our Eco Test Kitchen.

The Medical Solution Haiti Needs Now Three major developmental health agencies: the US EPA, USAID and the UNDP agree that the medical conditions of Perinatal Mortality (including Stillbirth) and Acute Lower Respiratory Illness are caused by exposure to cookfire smoke. These related medical conditions are now the number-one killer of children under five globally, and specifically in the country of Haiti. Since this environmental exposure is a recognized cause for these specific medical conditions, FdS proposes a medical regimen to address these medical conditions. Help FdS confront these medical conditions through proven technology that was selected by our local program participants. Complete details are here.

PCIA Partnership
During the past year, FdS has joined the Partnership for Clean Indoor Air (PCIA). PCIA is affiliated with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). FdS participated in the PCIA Intensive Training Trip to Guatemala. PCIA is also sponsoring the travel of Kevin Adair in order for us to participate. Wonderful thanks to US EPA PCIA for this developmental opportunity!

Donate a Sun Oven Now
Through Solar Household Energy (SHE), Americans can make tax-deductible donations of Sun Ovens for Haitian and DR families. SHE is so named because ecological cooking options have major health and social advantages for the women and girls of the communities where the technology is introduced. The Sun Oven that you donate now will provide a family with 15 years of cooking in the 80% of days in Haiti where there is sun. Families in the region can spend half of their monthly household budget on purchasing illegal charcoal. Save lives, improve comfort / nutrition, and save trees year after year with your tax-deductible Sun Oven donation now.

New Programs for High Schools and Universities. The American School in London just joined us on the Fair Trade Chocolate Lovers' Tour. Your school could be next. Plus we have a Sun Oven fundraising / awareness raising program available for schools and other groups. Our lesson plans encourage students to learn how they can work to help the most impoverished people in the Western Hemisphere.

Fair Trade Chocolate Lovers' Tour!
El Fuego del Sol will once again present the Fair Trade Chocolate Lovers Tour. Learn how you can make sure that the chocolate that you enjoy was not made with any form of slave labor. See personally what benefits Fair Trade standards can bring to local cacao growers, their families and the greater community. This is always one of our most popular tours.

Sun Oven New Years Tour!
We have our next Sun Oven Tour in the works for winter 2012/2013! Pack up your family for a trip that features direct connections with local youth and adult leaders from both sides of the Dominican / Haitian border. Visit the only Eco Test Kitchen in the Caribbean. See the benefits of solar cooking and ultra-efficient woodstoves. And, celebrate the New Year.  Taste delicious traditional foods cooked with sustainable methods. The trip features historical and cultural sites, including the home of the son of Christopher Columbus, the first street constructed in the Americas, and detailed insight into how two cultures have developed on one island. Learn about indigenous species. Work to directly replant trees in a precious tropical forest. See flamingos, iguanas and many wonderful animals and plants in their natural habitats. See original hieroglyphs left by pre-Columbian Taino tribes. Help all FdS ecological projects by joining us on our tours.

Literally and virtually. El Fuego del Sol partners believe in 100% transparent developmental opportunities. There's lots of info up at www.elfuegodelsol.com and tours are available now for a visit to the Fair Trade Chocolate Coop: CONACADO and our Eco Test Kitchen - Sun Oven Introduction and Distribution Center. Tours are being scheduled now, or you can schedule your own customized tour for your family or your group. Contact us now.

Volunteer in Your Hometown.

You don't need to leave your hometown to make a real difference for some of the most impoverished families in the Western Hemisphere. Host a Sun Oven fundraiser at your school or any group that cares about the environment. Sam Posen did it. Briana Levin did it too. Your group could be next! Remember, the complete Sun Oven Curriculum is available now, free of charge!
