On Friday, the LES at KPFK informed me that the on-air and in-person candidate forums will not be held until after September 1. The ballots go out August 15 and should arrive by September 1. Can Renee – or someone – explain this decision? In addition, the individual on-air spots, as of August 7, have been sporadic, badly mixed and certain candidates were denied the ability to record their own spots by the LES for no good reason.
I am sending this to Shawn to pass along as I’m not a member of the elections email list.

The carts I've heard at KPFT have all sounded good/easy to understand what's spoken, but I don't know about other stations.
I'd like to join Ken in requesting that links be added for each candidate at each station to their audio spot, as it might help people to associate the candidates' voices (that they hear on the air) with the written info on the web. In several past elections (including the 2009 one, I believe), such links were there. And of course after on-air forums are held, links to the recordings in which a candidate appeared should be added to each such candidate's page.
In addition, photos are helpful in recognizing candidates, but they are are only on the candidate web pages for some candidates. I presume this is because only some candidates sent photos. In the past, sometimes the LESs have taken photos of candidates whenever they can meet at the station or at an election event, to make it easier to get the photos in digital form to the LESs.
I don't remember seeing or hearing Spanish language candidate carts nor Spanish translations in past KPFT elections, but agree they would be nice to do if possible, and if we can be sure about accurate translations. I'd feel better about Spanish translations supplied by whichever candidates want to translate their own statements, though, in order to avoid accusations of poor translations. In Houston, our local League of Women Voters puts translated candidate statements only for candidates who supply the translations themselves, and that might be something to consider.
I think Spanish language ballot instrucions are more important, though, as people who know which candidates they want to vote for may still need an explanation in a familiar language on how to fill out the ballots.

Thank you, Richard. So, Renee, was your decision to hold all forums AFTER ballots arrive only for KPFK???? Why is KPFK singled out for this particularly disenfranchising idea???

Yes Kim.... I do !! Momentum should build; starting well before the actual event. It's like merging onto a freeway: you don't come down to the end of the on ramp - Stop - and then, just as the speeding traffic gets to you, try to speed-up to catch-up. Most folks also know that it take a person hearing something several times before they can really start thinking about it.
No, Renee; all stations should have been running stuff long ago: like we have been doing in Houston.Richard Uzzell, PNB Houston

WHAT????????????? How are people receiving their ballots going to even KNOW there will be these forums or more information on-air before they send back their ballots? Does anyone else on this list have a problem with this decision?

Aren't these extremely important schedules proof read thoroughly before they are sent out?
