Passed the PMP Exam on Sept 4th.

Hi All,

I’m happy to report the group has an additional PMP to its credit. I
passed the PMP exam on Sept 4th.

My PMP study began July 9th with the following:
• Read the PMBOK Guide from cover to cover: dry, but valuable read.
• Attended a five day PMP prep class: thanks to the instructor the
class was enjoyable and informational, but not the best resource
within my process.
• Read Andy Crowe’s PMP book: This book turned the lights on for me.
Clean easy to comprehend informational resource. Additionally, I
answered every question in this including the 200 question practice,
results to follow.
• Read Rita Mulcahy’s PMP book: While Rita can turn you off with
some of her condescending statements, I have to admit, based on my
exam experience, her chapter content was right on point. This book
basically gives you the PMI-isms as they relate to real world (large
scale) projects. I answered all questions, but I skipped her process
games.
• I answered every question I could get my hands on – more than
2,000 in total. Including the 200 question practice exams listed below
with my score:
o Andy Crowe: 200 question exam 92%
o Rita Mulcahy: Chapter questions – averaged 85%
o PMBOK Q&A: 205 questions 91%
o Crosswind Exam Sim: 200 question exam 89%
o Head First 200 questions 87

Despite the high scores on the practice exams, I found the PMP exam to
be difficult and harder than any of the practice exams I took. I
passed the PMP exam with a moderately proficient score for all process
five groups.

I would strongly suggest taking at least three full 200 question
practice exams. Doing so, gave me confidence during some of the more
challenging areas of exam that I knew the material and would be fine.

As with others, I would like to thank this board for doing an
incredible job in aiding folks on this incredible journey. While, I
discovered the group in the latter stages of my process, reading the
posts and seeing others achieve their certification was a great boost
of energy and encouragement for me to stay focused on my goal of
becoming a PMP!

Congratulations and thank you for sharing a really useful set of
lessons learned. Your LLs are to the point, unlike those where people
talk about what they ate on the night before the exam :)

Dear Bryan,
A many many congratulation, you did very well in practice exam too. How did you dealt with the ITTO, did you use any pnemonics or shortcut to remmber all the ITTOs for the 42 processes.
and Your LLs are very encouraging.

Hi Kausik,

I didn’t use memorization techniques for the ITTOs. My approach was
to understand the PMBOK to a level that would allow me to know where I
was in the project lifecycle based on the question being asked. Many
questions provided hints (some useful, some not so much) to let me
know where I was in the lifecycle and the question asked e.g., “What
is the BEST thing to do NEXT”.

Knowing the IITO names and their alignment is good, but knowing when
and how to apply them is probably better.
