Hello everyone,

I need your help. I'm preparing some material on the topic "Commonly
Confused Concepts" (for PMP /CAPM exams). I need your help in
suggesting concepts that people often get confused with. I'll start
with a few examples:

1. Crashing vs Fast tracking
2. Free Float vs Total Float

Please continue adding to this list. You don't need to provide
answers. My target is to have 50 such pairs. If we can come up with 50
pairs, it would become a great asset for people preparing for PMP /
CAPM certifications.

A tip to get everyone to pitch in ..

Open the PMBOK Guide (4th ed) and search for terms "see also" and
"contrast with". It will give you lots of hints. But don't limit
yourself to what's in the guide. Remember that everything that you
need to know for the exam is "not" there in the PMBOK Guide. For
example, here is one that you won't find in the Guide.

Hello Prem,

We'll have to refine that somewhat because we have Perform Integrated
Change Control, Change Control System, Contract Change Control System,
but there's nothing called "Perform Integrated Change Control System".
So, can we change it into 2 entries:

Perform Integrated Change Control vs Change Control System
Change Control System vs Contract Change Control System

Or you may suggest a better way to put it.

I'm sure we'll have to re-look at the entire list at the end and
refine it further anyway.

Hello Pradeep,

Those are really good pointers. I will do the following:

- add Planned Value vs Earned Value,
- change "Earned Value vs Actual Value" -> "Earned Value vs Actual
Cost" because I'm not sure there's such a concept as "Actual Value" in
EVM.
- add Forward Pass vs Backward Pass.
- add Gantt chart vs Tracking Gantt
- change Log vs Lag -> Lead vs Lag, unless someone seconds "Log vs
Lag" also.
- put Hammock vs WBS on stand-by. Probably someone can help refine it
- change Resources vs Roles -> Role vs Responsibility

Just my 20p worth on this list. Firstly, thanks for making this unique effort. But.....

The true value of such a list would emerge only if it contains really confusing pairs. We are not here making a study list, are we? I mean, things like Earned Value vs Actual Cost are surely not confusing to some people, are they? Or take Crashing vs Fast tracking as an even better example.

I suggest that you, as an expert, and a couple of others, if somebody volunteers, accept all entries, but prune them to a much smaller, tighter list. To me personally, that would add tremendous value.

Hello Huzefa,

That's a great feedback.

1. First of all, I agree with you and was planning to do what you
suggested to some extent. I don't plan to address all the items. The
next step is to shortlist them.

2. However, as a good brainstorming practice, I didn't want to start
filtering the ideas while people were still thinking. That would have
discouraged them from thinking further. I wanted to collect all the
ideas first and then start analyzing them. We haven't come to the
analysis stage yet.

3. Looking at the list I see merit in lot of the items. My plan is to
shortlist this to about 20-25 real "commonly" confused items. There
are about 10 which are already addressed on my blog through separate
posts or comments. But I want to consolidate everything into 1 or 2
pages.

4. I don't want to lose this list also. I think it can serve as a good
"checklist" for anybody studying for the PMP or CAPM exam. I'll be
definitely posting this on the blog but under a different title,
though even this will need some cleanup job.

It's a great example of good team work. I could have never come up
with such a list in such a short span of time. The response from so
many individuals has encouraged me to start thinking seriously about
my next project, which will require even more participating from the
forum members. I'll talk about it in a separate thread.

Yeah that was the original idea but it seems very difficult to fit 2
concepts into one card. I can surely do one concept in one card, but
then it won't show the comparison. I need to think about a good way to
do it. Your ideas are welcome.

Thats a great initiatives indeed, the team is involved in making a benchmark and ever resourcefull material (a flash card on the terms which are confusing to many of us) for whole community of PMP and assocaites. At this point of time I remember a quote from Michael Jordan - "Talent wins Games but teamwork wins Champaionships" 

 

I have been with the group since a long time I completed my PMP and always wish to be connected and be resourcefull for the aspirants and even PMP working community.

 

also appreciate all endeavors of Harwinder and other friends and colleagues (sorry could not names all our heros) who are consistently adding value and leading the way forward to keep PMP aspirants focussed.

If you just see the Chapter wise focus by Sree....

Today she was explaining about the Program Management and Portfolio Management and she has some points mentioned and those are the differences between the 2 topics.. So I was just suggesting if something of that sort can be done. It would be of great help... And also any specific word which implies the topic has to be in BOLD letters..

For ex:

A project is temporary in nature... Like wise... each topic will have something unique words, and that has to be highlighted.

Sure, I'll look into your suggestion. But again the flashcards have a
character limit. I can only fit about 50 words or so on one card. So
it needs some creativity to capture the essence within that limit.

Thanks a lot for the effort put by all the heros in the leadership of Harwinder in collecting "commonly confused concept". however looks like this will require few iteration with the help of survey and feedback from the group members.

 

I am sure in due course of time the terms will stretch up to 100 or more...and in my view

 

- it should be an independent flashbook free downloadable so that an aspirants could download read, understand and perfect themself independent of internet availability.

 

- all the collected concepts should be answered as the best practice irrespective of some people would be already knwoing them.

 

- there should be first hand written defination and comparison/clarification of the confused terms than over and above there could be vendors videos link for more understanding which may be required dependecy of internet.

 

anyone in the group may feel free to add their comments to perfect the flash book so that all aspirants and professionals of PMP & CAPM may benefit from the efforts of the group.
