Subject: Updating custom columns on login?

I've added some custom columns to my user table.  They are not required
fields, however, during login I would like the user to be able to pass me
data to put into these fields.  I know how to do it during registration of
a user but not during authentication.  Any idea/suggestions on how to go
about this?
