Inspired by Modbury's example, we've set up a small group of
volunteers and local traders under the local community partnership
(which I chair) to make Henfield (Henfield is a village of about 5500
population) plastic bag free. We've got widespread local support from
resident, local councils and most traders, and have set early May as
changeover day. One issue that has come up is from a local dry
cleaners that use plastic to protect clothes after cleaning and is
happy to use an alternative - can anyone suggest what might be
suitable for covering clothes like suits, dresses?

One outlet that has so far refused to joined in is One Stop which is
owned by Tescos. Has anyone had any success elsewhere with them? We
haven't resorted yet to giving them bad publicity but that's probably
the next step!

Hi Tony,
I think I may be able to help a little on the dry cleaning front.

We don't have a dry cleaners in Modbury.. but a husband of one of the
Modbury traders runs a dry cleaning business down in Cornwall.
Ever since we became PBF he has been trying to find a solution to his
use of plastic in this business.

He is in the process of changing over and this is what he's come up
with.

(Actually it's a clothing version of what we do here with our shopping
bags.)

For his regular customers he offers the option of a reusable tote
garment bag, which once bought the customer can obviously reused time
and time again.

For customers that don't want to buy a tote bag, he offers a biobag
garden bag http://www.biobags.co.uk/products.html
(He puts a coat-hanger throw the bottom of the bag, turns the bag
upside down so the open end is at the bottom) He charges for the cost
of the bag to the customer.

And lastly the customer has the option of not having any covering on
their clothes (the naked option) which is obviously free.

He has also found biodegradable coat-hangers which are made from
recycled cardboard but are as tough as old boots and last a very long
time.

Hope that helps...

As for the one shop... don't know ????? But Tesco's.. well the people
who have had luck with Tesco's are Cathy and Robin...

Best wishes

Rebecca
